Navigating the Supervisory Relationship
November 12, 2019 at 12:00 PM to 2:00 PM
|Location:||Deparmental Lounge, B742 Loeb Building|
|Audience:||Current Students, Faculty|
|Key Contact:||Dani Normandeau|
Grad school can feel good or awful, and a lot of how it is comes down to the relationship with a thesis supervisor. This discussion will focus on the supervisory relationship in many of its permutations – how to find a supervisor, what to do when things aren’t working out or they’re not responding to your emails or drafts, how to change to a different supervisor, the relationship between the committee and the advisor, and how to “manage up,” and anything else that might come up.
The workshop will have two parts. Part one, open only to students, will give you an opportunity to talk together about experiences and questions, identify shared problems, and generate potentially-anonymous questions to bring to the second part. Part two will bring in faculty who will offer strategies and answer questions, and who will also take responsibility for bringing student concerns back to the department-level caucuses.
This workshop can also count towards TA training hours. If interested, and you haven’t already completed your 5 hours, please register on Carleton Central.
