Catherine Naughton is a PhD Student in the Department of Psychology and Centre for Social Issues Research at The University of Limerick, Ireland. Her research focuses on the role of social identities in the social transmission of domestic and sexual violence.  Exposure to domestic violence (DV) in childhood is defined as a complex trauma, and as strong social identities may help individuals respond to and recover from trauma, they may serve a protective function for those exposed to DV in their families of origin. However, and paradoxically, problematic norms relating to the acceptability of DV can mean that these same individuals may also be at risk of becoming either victim and/or perpetrator later in life.
