1. Tracking Digital Declarations: Facilitating Evidence-based Innovation across Youth Centres
The Tracking Digital Declarations project is a SSHRC funded study that explores digital tools for documenting attendance and immediate outcomes at volunteer-based, non profit initiatives that can be shared with funders, stakeholders and researchers. Together with technology partner Distill Mobile, the national organization Youth Centres Canada and six grassroots youth centres, we will take a participatory approach to understanding who uses youth centre programs and to establish tools to link sign in data to participation patterns and program impacts. This partnership will address the problems faced by our community partners of how to develop data collection practices and technologies that are low cost, sustainable and able to collect a high standard data that is flexible enough to be meaningful in a wide range of communities with diverse populations as well as facilitative of further academic research. 2. Youth REX
Like the rest of the grassroots sector, youth centres lack secure and sustainable funding and are continually asked to do more with less. Funding agencies and governments have largely moved away from multi-year core funding to short term project funding. This has increased the precariousness of these organizations and has resulted in increased numbers of part-time contract employees with low wages and few, if any, benefits. These funding conditions limit the capacity of youth centres to collect, clean and analyze the data necessary to document who is using their services, track the patterns of program usage and share these findings with funders, governmental stakeholders and academics.
YouthREX is funded by the Ontario Ministry of Children and Youth Services and its mission is to make research evidence and evaluation accessible and relevant to Ontario’s youth sector through knowledge mobilization, capacity building and evaluation leadership.
The Eastern Ontario Hub is currently supporting grassroots youth organizations in developing theories of change and we are providing customized evaluation supports. The hub recently developed a webinar on “art jams” as evaluation outside the lines. We are also networking with francophone youth serving organizations in the region.

3. Unsettling the Classroom
This research is based at Ryerson University, School of Social Work in Toronto and is funded by the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada. The project was developed by critical educators and researchers concerned with the way in which new managerialism is pervading social work pedagogy and practice. The goal of this research is to clarify the specific ways in which new managerialism is influencing social work education in order to understand how social work educators can best respond to the new managerial context in which we teach. We are interested in how our educational practices might ensure that we are preparing our students to be flexible practitioners who have the skills and knowledge to be able to help the diverse client groups with whom we work. Ultimately, we aim to understand how educational practices can remain focused upon social justice, intellectual rigour, and critical reflection while operating within the changing governance structures of new managerialism.
