She brings over a decade of experience in social work education, community practice, field education, and equity-focused leadership. Her work is embedded in advancing social justice and supporting historically marginalized communities, particularly African, Caribbean, and Black (ACB) communities.

As the Master of Social Work Practicum Coordinator, Allison provides leadership in field education and supports the development of ethical, reflective, and culturally responsive social work practitioners. She works collaboratively with students, Faculty Liaisons, and community agencies to strengthen meaningful practicum learning experiences.

Allison is the Chair and Co-founder of the School of Social Work’s Black History Committee. This initiative is dedicated to mentorship, celebration, education, and year-round recognition of Black histories, contributions, and lived experiences. Through this work, she has helped create spaces that foster belonging, amplify community voices, and promote equity within the university and broader community.

Her scholarly research focuses on culturally responsive pedagogy, field education, and the recruitment and retention of underrepresented students in professional programs. Her research interests also include community-engaged and Africentric approaches to social work education and practice, with a particular focus on pathways to increase the recruitment and retention of ACB students in professional practice programs.

Allison teaches courses focused on social work practice with individuals, families and communities, social work values and ethics, as well as field education. Her teaching philosophy centres relationship-building, critical reflection, experiential learning, and supporting students in developing inclusive, ethical, and socially responsive practice skills.

Allison was named FACES Magazine’s Professor of the Year in 2023 and 2024. In 2025, she received Carleton University’s Faculty of Public and Global Affairs EDI Excellence Award and the Leading Ladies of Canada Award. In 2026, she was recognized by the Government of Jamaica for leading a Hurricane Melissa relief initiative that delivered essential supplies to affected residents. These honours, along with numerous other awards and recognitions, reflect her contributions to teaching, mentorship, equity, education, and community leadership.

Beyond the classroom, Allison is a sought-after speaker, facilitator, and workshop leader who has delivered keynote addresses, professional development sessions, and community talks on social work education, equity, Black history, mentorship, and community engagement.

Courses Taught

SOWK 2202 Introduction to Social Work Practice with Individuals and Families

SOWK 2005 Values and Ethics for Social Work

SOWK 2203 Introduction to Social Work Practice with Groups and Communities

Field Education

Areas of interest

Pedagogy of field education

Community development and mobilization

Racialization, belonging, and identity

Teaching culturally Responsive social work practice

Housing and homelessness

Mental health and human rights advocacy

Healing and resilience in Black communities

Racial trauma

Affiliations

Co-founder and Chair, School of Social Work’s Black History Committee

Member, Carleton University Racialized and Indigenous Faculty Alliance

Member, Carleton University Equity and Inclusive Communities (EIC) Advisory Committee

Member, Alliance of Ontario Social Work Field Education Directors (AOSWFED)

Member, Field Education Committee, Canadian Association of Social Work Education (CASWE)

Member, Ontario College of Social Workers and Social Service Workers (OCSWSSW)

Member, Council on Social Work Education (CSWE)

Member, Ontario Association of Social Workers (OASW)

[66,73

post-651","cu_people","type-cu_people","status-publish","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","cu_people_type-administrative-staff","cu_people_type-associate-professor
["GET
