Research Seminars

June 1, 2018 at 1:30 PM

Location:3124 Mackenzie
Cost:Free

Speaker: Kirk Hovell, PhD Student

Abstract: Researchers have been able to harness machine learning to solve very interesting problems due to increases in the computing power over the last decade. Kirk’s research studies how machine learning can be applied to robotics to allow robots to design their own controllers to satisfy high-level goals (this field is known as Deep Reinforcement Learning). This seminar presents the details of how machine learning works using a very simple example, and then shows the early stages of Kirk’s research where he uses machine learning to control a robot arm in simulation.
