{"id":1214,"date":"2019-03-11T00:00:56","date_gmt":"2019-03-11T04:00:56","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/springconference\/?p=1214"},"modified":"2019-03-11T00:00:56","modified_gmt":"2019-03-11T04:00:56","slug":"how-do-we-perceive-reality","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/springconference\/2019\/how-do-we-perceive-reality\/","title":{"rendered":"How do we perceive reality?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/psychology\/people\/benoit-antoine-bacon\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Professor, President and Vice-Chancellor Benoit-Antoine Bacon<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> maintains that we really see the world with our brains, not with our eyes, and the brain has a \u201cmind of its own.\u201d The process of visual perception appears simple and direct because we open our eyes and the world is immediately perceived as clear and fully formed, but it is in fact very much complex and indirect.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Visual illusions are interesting because they reveal these complex processes and \u2018rules of thumb\u2019 that the brain uses to interpret the inherently ambiguous nature of visual information.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As we look through a series of visual stimuli, we will realize that what we see is not really the world as it is, but rather the interpretation that our brain has built based on input from the eyes, and that this interpretation is meant to be &#8220;useful&#8221; rather than accurate. In his presentation, Benoit-Antoine will attempt to link these demonstrations with the need to always look at reality with a critical eye, pun intended, and to cultivate healthy rational skepticism.
