Planning your course selections and schedule in advance of your time-ticket is an important part of a successful registration process. Using all the registration tools available to you will assist you in building a conflict free timetable that meets all your academic requirements. Some of the tools you will need include:
- the current University Calendar (Undergraduate) (Graduate)
- the course worksheet tool (via Carleton Central)
- Returning Students: your academic audit on Carleton Central
- What is the course worksheet tool?
-
The course worksheet tool will allow you to search the class schedule and build multiple draft timetables. Any registration errors that you may encounter with your course selections will also be flagged in the warnings column. As this tool highlights any scheduling conflicts within your timetable, it will also help you resolve any conflicts in your schedule before you register.
- Select your Registration Term
-
From the registration menu, select “Build Your Timetable/Registration.” Select the term that you want to plan and click continue. You will be brought to the class search page where you can enter the fields you wish to search.
Remember that registration for the fall and winter terms must be completed separately.
- Search Criteria
You can search on a number of different criteria, but keep in mind that the more search criteria you use, the more limited your results will be.
Subject You can search for more than one subject at a time by holding down the CTRL key; this is your basic search unit. Course Number/Level You can search for all courses in a particular year level (ex: to search all second year sociology courses, you would select sociology in the subject field and enter 2 in the course number field). Special Criteria You can limit the courses displayed to only those courses that still have open spaces in the class by selecting “show only courses open for registration.” You can also choose to display conflicts between your course selections and your unavailable times. Hypothetical Courses from Audit This option is only available to returning undergraduate degree students.
- Search Results
-
On this page, you will see all the classes that match your search criteria. Column headings that appear in blue are linked to a page that can provide you with more information. When reviewing your search results, be aware of the “also register in” notation as this will tell you if there is another part of the course that you must register for simultaneously. Also take note as to whether the course has prerequisites or restrictions. If the course indicates that there are restrictions, you can see what they are by clicking on the “Yes” text below the restrictions column. You can add courses to your registration worksheet by clicking the checkbox beside the course. Once you have selected all the courses of interest to you, click on “Proceed to Worksheet” at the bottom of the page. This will bring you to your draft timetable. If you want to add additional classes, click on the “Return to Search” button at the bottom of the page and repeat the previous steps.
- My Course Worksheet
-
All of your course selections will appear in a draft timetable. If you have preselected courses (i.e. Engineering), these courses will appear in your worksheet. You should review the course listings to ensure that there are no warnings associated with the courses you have selected. It is recommended that you save multiple draft worksheets to prepare you for various registration scenarios. For example, one of your course selections might be full by the time you register. By having an alternative worksheet you will be prepared to complete your registration a lot faster!
- Conflicts
-
Any conflicts in your schedule will appear in red. These course selections must be resolved before proceeding to register as university policy prohibits students from registering in a course conflict. It is recommended that you view multiple weeks of your timetable to ensure that you do not have any conflicts. There are a few instances where a scheduling conflict will be permitted. For example, a VOD section of a course may be offered at the same time as an in-class lecture section. These conflicts are permissible conflicts and will appear in your schedule in green. It is important to note that although you will be permitted to register in these conflicts, you are responsible for meeting all academic requirements of these courses, including examinations.
- Registration
-
Once your time-ticket opens, review your worksheet to see if there are any new warnings associated with the classes you want to add (i.e. that the class is not full). If you are satisfied with your course selections and your timetable is conflict AND warning free, click on the “Proceed to Registration” button. You will then be brought to the registration page in Carleton Central where you will see the CRNs (course reference numbers) for the courses already populated in the registration boxes.
If you encounter registration errors, you will have to reconsider your schedule carefully. You do have a few options when you receive an error message:
- you may try adding a different section or another course to fill your timetable
- you can join a waitlist for courses that are full and that have a waitlist enabled
- you can submit a Registration Override Request for access to a course with restrictions
- Full Session Courses
-
Some courses begin in September and run until April. These are called full session courses. When planning your timetable, you must add the same section of the course in both the fall and the winter session to your worksheet. When you add the fall session to your worksheet, the warning message “This is a full session course. Register in the same section for both the Fall and Winter” will appear in the warnings column, but this Will NOT prevent your registration in the course. When your time-ticket opens and you proceed to register, you will automatically be registered in the winter portion of the course when you successfully add the fall portion.
- Help
-
There are a number of how to videos available for viewing on the registration website to help you navigate Carleton Central. If you are having troubles with registration, you may wish to speak with the student registration assistance team or an academic advisor.
