Reduce the Carbon in Your Diet

Did you know?

Eating beef in your diet, 1-2 times per week, can produce the same carbon emissions annually as driving a car 2500 km.

Meat has a high carbon footprint because of the land, water, and energy it takes to produce, process, and transport.

How to get started…

More than a quarter of the global carbon emissions come from what we eat, and most of those come from animal products.

Eating plant-based meals at lunchtime, for catered meetings and events, or at dinner time, can reduce your carbon footprint. To start with this could be one day a week.

Pro-tip…

Try out a new plant-based recipe or two, and share your favourite ones with colleagues remotely during a “virtual lunch break” to inspire and connect with your peers!

Food in time of COVID-19…

Depending less on meat-based meals during product shortages and unexpected supply chain interruptions makes you and your family more resilient in the face of uncertainty.

Many local farm-led food box organizations, such as ottawagoodfoodbox.ca, are offering free doorstep delivery. A great way to support local farms and growers. You can also donate a box for families in need at this time.

Carleton is working hard to connect our community to locally sourced ingredients and the producers behind them, for example, John Vanderberg and his farm ‘Rideau Pines Farm’, just 20km from the campus, supply the CU kitchens with broccoli, cauliflower, beets and more.
