We are all connected to the ocean in some way. Carleton University is surrounded by water and green spaces, serving as an important reminder to be an environmental steward and to responsibly manage our ecosystems.<\/p>\n<h3><span lang=\"en-US\"><b>Did you know?\u00a0<\/b><\/span><\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li><span class=\"JsGRdQ\">Every year, <\/span><strong><span class=\"JsGRdQ\">13 million tonnes<\/span><\/strong> <span class=\"JsGRdQ\">of plastic enters the sea.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span class=\"JsGRdQ\">The Great Pacific Garbage Patch, the largest accumulation of ocean plastic in the world, is an estimated<\/span><strong><span class=\"JsGRdQ\"> 1.6 million square km<\/span><span class=\"JsGRdQ\">, an area twice the size of Texas.<\/span><\/strong><\/li>\n<li><span class=\"JsGRdQ\">Plastic debris is the cause of death of <\/span><strong><span class=\"JsGRdQ\">one million<\/span><\/strong><span class=\"JsGRdQ\"> seabirds and <\/span><span class=\"JsGRdQ\"><strong>100,000<\/strong> marine mammals<\/span><span class=\"JsGRdQ\"> every year.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span class=\"JsGRdQ\">It takes <\/span><strong><span class=\"JsGRdQ\">3 litres of water <\/span><\/strong><span class=\"JsGRdQ\">to make a 1-litre plastic bottle.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span class=\"JsGRdQ\">Plastic bags are used for an average of <\/span><span class=\"JsGRdQ\">12 minutes,<\/span><span class=\"JsGRdQ\"> but a <strong>single plastic bag has a life expectancy of <\/strong><\/span><strong><span class=\"JsGRdQ\">up to 1,000 years.<\/span><\/strong><\/li>\n<li><span class=\"JsGRdQ\">At this pace, <strong>we will end up with <\/strong><\/span><strong><span class=\"JsGRdQ\">more plastic than fish by the year 2050.<\/span><\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Source: <a href=\"https:\/\/wedocs.unep.org\/bitstream\/handle\/20.500.11822\/25513\/state_plastics_WED.pdf?sequence=1&amp;isAllowed=y\">UNEP<\/a><\/p>\n<h3><strong><span lang=\"en-US\">How to get started&#8230;<\/span><\/strong><\/h3>\n<ol>\n<li><strong><span class=\"JsGRdQ\">Refuse <\/span><\/strong><span class=\"JsGRdQ\"><span class=\"JsGRdQ\">single-use plastics. Ask for sustainable alternatives to single-use plastics.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<li><span class=\"JsGRdQ\"><span class=\"JsGRdQ\"><strong>Reduce<\/strong> your plastic footprint by eliminating the number of plastic products used.<\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<li><span class=\"JsGRdQ\"><strong>Re-use. <\/strong><\/span><span class=\"JsGRdQ\">If you can\u2019t use an alternative to plastic, re-use it when possible and dispose of it responsibl<\/span><span class=\"JsGRdQ\">y.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span class=\"JsGRdQ\"><strong>Recycle<\/strong>. <\/span><span class=\"JsGRdQ\">If you must purchase plastic, opt for those that are recyclable to reduce items going in the landfill.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span class=\"JsGRdQ\"><strong>Educate<\/strong> yourself why the issue of plastic pollution is so important. <\/span><span class=\"JsGRdQ\">Find educational resources (books, movies, lectures) on ocean pollution.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li><strong>Participate in a community clean-up<\/strong> to help protect local waterways, when safe to do so.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Support organizations addressing plastic pollution prevention.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Avoid products using microbeads<\/strong>, often identified on labels as polyethylene, polypropylene, polylactic acid (PLA), polystyrene or polyethylene terephthalate. Microbeads are tiny plastic particles that end up polluting water streams which are highly damaging to the natural environment and wildlife.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Put pressure on manufacturers.\u00a0<\/strong>Urge companies you buy to reduce their plastic consumption. Let your voice be heard.
