{"id":1564,"date":"2020-06-30T17:24:37","date_gmt":"2020-06-30T21:24:37","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/sustainability\/?p=1564"},"modified":"2020-07-20T13:18:48","modified_gmt":"2020-07-20T17:18:48","slug":"weekly-sustainability-tip-how-to-have-a-zero-waste-canada-day","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/sustainability\/2020\/weekly-sustainability-tip-how-to-have-a-zero-waste-canada-day\/","title":{"rendered":"Weekly Sustainability Tip: How to Have a Zero-Waste Event"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Plastic Free July kicks off July 1st on Canada Day.<\/strong> Large events such as Canada Day is one of our largest waste generating days of the year as we often produce more food waste, disposal of single-use items, and often leaving behind litter.<\/p>\n<p>Recently, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ontarioparks.com\/parksblog\/keeping-parks-trash-free\/\">Ontario Parks<\/a> has seen an increase of litter from visitors in their parks:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Visitors who come for just the day may leave even more behind, as they bring everything for a disposable family barbecue, like disposable cups, plates, cutlery, tablecloths, and all of the wrapping and containers. Many of which end up scattered on the ground.<\/p>\n<p>So while we do still think of our parks as clean environments, visitors cause our parks to produce tonnes of garbage from these clean and natural environments.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>Let&#8217;s celebrate without the waste.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">1. Tableware<\/span><\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>Use what you have. Clothing<\/span><\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>Before you go out and purchase an entirely new Canada day outfit, check to see if you have anything at home that can be used or upcycle an old t-shirt.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">4. Food<\/span><\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>Have leftovers? Reduce your food waste by bringing reusable containers with you or your guests to take home.<\/li>\n<li>Bring food without the plastic. You can also find a variety of food with plastic-free packaging (i.e., fruits, veggies, and nuts).<\/li>\n<li>DIY food you would normally buy in the packaging, such as making homemade chips, dips, granola, popsicles, etc.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-1579\" src=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/sustainability\/wp-content\/uploads\/6-2-400x286.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"603\" height=\"431\" srcset=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/sustainability\/wp-content\/uploads\/6-2-400x286.png 400w, https:\/\/carleton.ca\/sustainability\/wp-content\/uploads\/6-2-1400x1000.png 1400w, https:\/\/carleton.ca\/sustainability\/wp-content\/uploads\/6-2-300x214.png 300w, https:\/\/carleton.ca\/sustainability\/wp-content\/uploads\/6-2-768x548.png 768w, https:\/\/carleton.ca\/sustainability\/wp-content\/uploads\/6-2-1536x1097.png 1536w, https:\/\/carleton.ca\/sustainability\/wp-content\/uploads\/6-2-700x500.png 700w, https:\/\/carleton.ca\/sustainability\/wp-content\/uploads\/6-2-200x143.png 200w, https:\/\/carleton.ca\/sustainability\/wp-content\/uploads\/6-2.png 2000w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 603px) 100vw, 603px\" \/><\/h3>\n<h3><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">5. Lastly, leave nothing behind. <\/span><\/h3>\n<p>Remember not to litter. Make a conscious effort to continue to recycle, compost and dispose of waste.<\/p>\n<h3>Follow the 5 Rs of Zero Waste:<\/h3>\n<ol>\n<li><strong>Refuse<\/strong> using disposable items such as single-use plastic items: disposable cups, plastic bottles, straws, plates, cutlery, plastic wrapping and plastic bags.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Reduce.<\/strong> Consume less and focus on necessary purchases rather than splurging on things you don&#8217;t need.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Reuse<\/strong> what you can. Aim for effort rather than perfection. Keep in mind that these zero-waste event tips can be applied beyond Canada Day to future events.
