We are halfway through the month and hope that the tips we shared these last couple weeks on &#8216;<strong>Refuse<\/strong>&#8216; and<strong>\u00a0&#8216;Reduce&#8217;<\/strong>\u00a0helped you work towards your future plastic-free lifestyle. As a reminder, each week during Plastic-Free July, we will focus on each of the\u00a0<strong>5<\/strong>\u00a0<strong>R&#8217;s of Zero-Waste<\/strong>\u00a0and provide practical tips to incorporate them into your life. Just to refresh your memory, the\u00a0<strong>5 R&#8217;s\u00a0<\/strong>are\u00a0<strong>Refuse, Reduce, Reuse, Recycle,\u00a0<\/strong>and<strong>\u00a0Rot<\/strong>. This week, our focus is on the third &#8220;R&#8221; &#8211;\u00a0<strong>Reuse<\/strong>. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-thumbnail wp-image-3703 alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/sustainability\/wp-content\/uploads\/The-5-Rs-300x300.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/sustainability\/wp-content\/uploads\/The-5-Rs-300x300.png 300w, https:\/\/carleton.ca\/sustainability\/wp-content\/uploads\/The-5-Rs-400x400.png 400w, https:\/\/carleton.ca\/sustainability\/wp-content\/uploads\/The-5-Rs-150x150.png 150w, https:\/\/carleton.ca\/sustainability\/wp-content\/uploads\/The-5-Rs-200x200.png 200w, https:\/\/carleton.ca\/sustainability\/wp-content\/uploads\/The-5-Rs.png 500w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/>The 5 R&#8217;s are interconnected and often represented as a circular guide, as seen on the left. This means some tips provided can be used interchangeably between the R&#8217;s and may be repeated. Last week, we discussed reducing the amount of single-use plastics consumed. Now we&#8217;ll look at the next step &#8211; reusing the plastics that you have that were unable to be refused or reduced. This is often done by upcycling plastics you already own to extend their lifecycle, or by simply using reusable alternatives to disposable products.<br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<h3><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Check out these tips below on ways you can reuse plastics:<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><\/p>\n<h4><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-thumbnail wp-image-3756 alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/sustainability\/wp-content\/uploads\/plasticbottlegarden-300x300.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/sustainability\/wp-content\/uploads\/plasticbottlegarden-300x300.png 300w, https:\/\/carleton.ca\/sustainability\/wp-content\/uploads\/plasticbottlegarden-400x400.png 400w, https:\/\/carleton.ca\/sustainability\/wp-content\/uploads\/plasticbottlegarden-150x150.png 150w, https:\/\/carleton.ca\/sustainability\/wp-content\/uploads\/plasticbottlegarden-200x200.png 200w, https:\/\/carleton.ca\/sustainability\/wp-content\/uploads\/plasticbottlegarden.png 500w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/>Make a Garden<\/span><\/h4>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Use plastic bottles to make a hanging garden or mount them on a wall. All you need is plastic bottles, scissors, twine, and a place to hang or mount them. You can even reuse more plastics by using yogurt containers to start the seedlings, poking drainage holes in the bottom and using a plastic lid to catch the drips, then just transfer them to your plastic bottle planters!<\/span><\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<h4><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Save Your Floors<img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignright size-thumbnail wp-image-3755\" src=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/sustainability\/wp-content\/uploads\/plasticlids-300x171.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"171\" srcset=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/sustainability\/wp-content\/uploads\/plasticlids-300x171.jpg 300w, https:\/\/carleton.ca\/sustainability\/wp-content\/uploads\/plasticlids-400x229.jpg 400w, https:\/\/carleton.ca\/sustainability\/wp-content\/uploads\/plasticlids-768x439.jpg 768w, https:\/\/carleton.ca\/sustainability\/wp-content\/uploads\/plasticlids-700x400.jpg 700w, https:\/\/carleton.ca\/sustainability\/wp-content\/uploads\/plasticlids-200x114.jpg 200w, https:\/\/carleton.ca\/sustainability\/wp-content\/uploads\/plasticlids.jpg 1400w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/span><\/h4>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Do you rent your home or apartment or want to save your floors? Or have those late-night urges to just re-arrange your entire room? Try using plastic lids underneath the furniture to help prevent scratches and allow them to easily slide across the floor.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h4><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignleft size-thumbnail wp-image-3766\" src=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/sustainability\/wp-content\/uploads\/cropped_dogtoy-300x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"300\" \/>Keep Your Pets Occupied<\/span><\/h4>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Do you have a dog or puppy that loves to chew? Try making them a water bottle toy! This may not last long for those who are intense chewers, but for others, it can be a fun, low-cost toy to keep them occupied while you get things done around the house! Simply take an empty plastic water bottle (remove the cap!) and place it into an old sock and tie off the open end. Then watch as they enjoy their new, crunchy chew toy!<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h4><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Bread Tags and Their Many Uses<img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignright size-thumbnail wp-image-3757\" src=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/sustainability\/wp-content\/uploads\/BreadTag-300x300.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/sustainability\/wp-content\/uploads\/BreadTag-300x300.png 300w, https:\/\/carleton.ca\/sustainability\/wp-content\/uploads\/BreadTag-400x400.png 400w, https:\/\/carleton.ca\/sustainability\/wp-content\/uploads\/BreadTag-150x150.png 150w, https:\/\/carleton.ca\/sustainability\/wp-content\/uploads\/BreadTag-200x200.png 200w, https:\/\/carleton.ca\/sustainability\/wp-content\/uploads\/BreadTag.png 500w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/span><\/h4>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Did you know bread tags can be used for much more than keeping your bags of bread shut? Some other ways they can be used are as wine glass tags, power cord labels, marking the end of a tape roll, and even as a wired earbuds holder (even though I am sure most people have wireless earbuds nowadays).\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<h3>Swap those disposables for reusables!<\/h3>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Another way to reuse is by seeking out reusable alternatives to those disposable items we all buy.
