Welcome to Carleton University’s Teaching Assistant (TA) Website

TAs are on the front line of teaching, and contribute greatly to undergraduate education at Carleton. This website was specifically created to help support your work as a teaching assistant and keep you informed of the resources, support measures and initiatives to aid in your personal and professional development.

The EDC is thrilled to start the Fall 2020 online term. As courses have moved online, it is understandable that as TAs, this can be perceived as a challenging and unfamiliar approach. But – fear not! There is a variety of training material available to you.

TAs can play an integral role in supporting course instructors and students. A clear and practical plan will help you, the instructor, and your students have a successful term.

The Educational Development Centre (EDC) has developed online training modules, resources, and other virtual events for TAs, focusing primarily on online teaching. Aside from resources and training videos, the EDC will be offering live workshops (virtually) that will cover:

  • TA Basics 101: Being a Teaching Assistant in a Digital Environment. This Q & A session is offered several times in September. To register: go to Carleton Central to register: central.carleton.ca/
  • Conducting online tutorials
  • Facilitating break-out rooms
  • Moderating online lectures
  • Virtual office hours
  • Providing feedback and grades digitally
  • Online student engagement

There will also sessions focusing on general pedagogical themes including:

  • Creating a Teaching Philosophy Statement
  • Time Management
  • Developing a Workshop from Scratch
  • LGBTQ and the Classroom: creating a safe and inclusive space
