International teaching assistants (ITAs) face a number of cultural and communication challenges in addition to the traditional issues that face all teaching assistants. For this reason, Carleton University offers international teaching assistants additional support measures.

Each year the School for Language and Linguistics Studies collaborates with the EDC to identify an ITA Mentor to support international teaching assistants across the university. As a result ITAs have a TA Mentor dedicated solely to their success.

Programs and Support, 2018-2019

  1. International Graduate Student Community: The International Graduate Student Community is a cuLearn page where most information related to the ITA Mentor’s support being provided to international TAs and graduate students is posted. If you are not registered and would like to be, please contact the ITA Mentor.
  2. ITA Workshop Series: The goal of the ITA Workshop Series is to provide pedagogical support to international TAs that addresses cultural and linguistic concerns related to teaching at Carleton University. Each term, the ITA Mentor organizes and hosts a series of 3-4 workshops that cover these issues. The first workshop is on TA Training Day (Sept. 22nd) “Intercultural Communication: Meeting Challenges in Academic Communication as an ITA.
  3. ITA Writing Groups: Academic writing is difficult for everyone! The ITA Mentor offers a series of practical, hands-on workshops that are aimed at helping a small group of dedicated international graduate students better their writing abilities. These sessions will focus on issues commonly found in students who are writing in English as an additional/second language. These workshops take on a variety of issues faced by ESL writers in academia and will include the opportunity for face-to-face consultation. If you are not registered on the culearn page but wish to be, please contact the ITA Mentor for more information.
