To assist in achieving our institutional commitment to teaching, learning and innovation, the Carleton University Chair in Teaching Innovation is established. Each award is for a three-year period and is meant to contribute to the development of a scholarly approach to teaching and learning across the university and will maintain a particular emphasis on strategies to foster student success. The value of the award is $45,000 which will be allocated in three annual installments of $15,000.
This award recognizes faculty and contract instructors dedicated to sustained excellence in teaching, scholarship of teaching and the continual development of teaching. Three awards of $2,500 will be given out each year. Recipients of this award are also designated as Carleton University Teaching Fellows.
New faculty bring an energy and excitement to their teaching, often motivating those around them to challenge themselves and their practices. The Educational Development Centre developed this award to recognize those new faculty members who underscore Carleton’s commitment to teaching excellence and innovation. Three awards of $500 will be given out each year.
This award recognizes faculty members and contract instructors whose teaching in blended and/or online environments has had an exceptional impact on student learning. One award of $1,500 is presented annually.
This award recognizes the many Carleton University educational support staff members who contribute to the student learning experience. Though they do not hold instructor, faculty or teaching assistant positions, these individuals positively impact student learning through their tireless work and support in labs, classrooms and many other diverse learning environments across Carleton. One award of $750 will be presented annually. Please note: Teaching and Learning Services staff members (EDC, CUOL, IMS and OAVPTL) are not eligible for this award.
The purpose of this award is to recognize and enhance excellence in teaching and to provide financial support for the development of an innovative teaching project at Carleton University. Faculty who are CUASA members are eligible. Five awards are given out each year valued at $15,000.
The purpose of the Professional Achievement Award is to recognize outstanding scholarly achievements by instructors and librarians at Carleton University. Seven awards of $10,000 (five for instructors and two for librarians) are given out each year.
This award recognizes outstanding contract instructors at Carleton who promote teaching excellence. Five awards of $1,500 are given out annually.
This award recognizes demonstrated excellence in teaching within the Faculty of Science. Up to three awards of $500 for professorial faculty and up to two awards of $500 for contract instructors can be made each year.
FASS Teaching Development Awards (TDA) are available to individuals who are undertaking a major pedagogical advancement that clearly extends beyond the routine development of course materials. Up to two awards, with a maximum value of $4,000 per award, will be supported each year.
FASS Excellence in Teaching Awards (ETAs) recognize faculty members who have demonstrated excellence in teaching over a period that includes at least the most recent three years. Up to two awards, with a maximum value of $4,000 per award, will be supported each year.
This award recognizes one full-time faculty member and one contract instructor for merit in the areas of curricular development, commitment to student advising and engagement, teaching evaluations, curriculum and classroom innovation, and consistency in teaching excellence. Each award winner will receive an honorarium of $1,000.
This award provides full–time faculty and instructors with an opportunity to innovate and to demonstrate leadership in teaching, as well as to reward teaching excellence. One award may be granted each year. Award winners will receive a $1,000 one-time honorarium plus a research grant of up to $6,000 to be held over two years.
This award recognizes one full-time faculty member and one contract instructors for their commitment to student advising and engagement, curriculum development, and design and delivery of exceptional educational experiences for Sprott undergraduate and/or graduate students. Each recipient will receive a $1,500 one-time honorarium.
This award recognizes and celebrates faculty members, instructors and contract instructors in the Faculty of Engineering and Design for their excellence in teaching. Five awards may be given each year, with at least one designated for contract instructors. Each recipient will receive a $1,500 cash award.
A maximum of 10 Teaching Excellence Awards will be presented annually to Carleton educators who have demonstrated an outstanding ability to impart knowledge, consult students and invoke enthusiasm and participation from their students. This award is open to all teaching staff, including faculty, instructors and teaching assistants. Each successful candidate will receive a personalized plaque as well as a plaque on display at CUSA.
The Excellence Award in Graduate Teaching was established by the GSA in 1990 in order to recognize faculty and instructors who have, in the estimation of their graduate students, provided an outstanding contribution to university teaching at the graduate level. One award is presented annually in the form of a certificate as well as a permanent plaque that hangs in the GSA office.
