Distribution of marsh foraminifera at two sites 120 km apart on the west coast of Vancouver Island, British Columbia show a marked linear correlation with elevation. In particular, strong correlations are shown by Miliammina fusca<\/b> (-0.94) and by the grouping of Balticammina pseudomacrescens<\/b>, Jadammina macrescens<\/b> and Trochamminita salsa <\/b>(0.92). Highest correlation values are found in samples that include at least the top 2 to 3 cm–and particularly up to 10 cm–of surface sediment. Foraminifera from samples limited to the top centimeter correlate less well as the effect of infaunal habitat, taphonomic effects, and short term environmental variations have not been smoothed out.<\/p>\n
