Working with Your TA(s): Strategies for Building a Strong Teaching Team
August 29, 2022 at 10:00 AM to 11:30 AM
Cost: | Free |
Forging a strong and beneficial working relationship with your TA(s) requires effort and understanding, like other relationships. Teaching assistants play a vital role in the process of teaching and learning: grading exams, facilitating labs, leading (online) discussions, leading tutorials, and other responsibilities.
In this workshop we will: – define various roles and duties a teaching assistant can perform (for both online and F2F learning) – discuss how to maximize the differing levels of experience and skills of each TA – examine the importance of communication between the instructor and TA, including communicating course objectives such as learning outcomes, – provide information on pedagogical support TLS offers for TA as well as other resources available at Carleton – troubleshoot This session will be presented by three Educational Developers at TLS: 1. Samantha Shortt – coordinator of TA pedagogical training, and 2. Helen Roumeliotis and Ekpedeme Edem – current doctoral candidates at Carleton/former TAs/part-time TLS staff By the end of this session you will be able to: – apply best practices to fostering and maintaining healthy and strong working relationships with your TA(s) – list and elaborate on the factors to consider when assigning TA duties, including TA stages of development – inform your TA(s) of pedagogical and other supports available to them Space is limited.
