SUMMARY:Spotlight on AI – with Peggy Hartwick
DESCRIPTION:The “Spotlight on AI” series features speakers from across Carleton’s teaching community talking about the innovative ways that they are responding the challenges posed by AI. These faculty-led sessions are meant to be informal spaces where colleagues can share and discuss ideas with each other.

In this session, Dr. Hartwick will showcase an assignment designed in collaboration with a student and piloted at the graduate level. The assignment tasked students to document their language learning experiences with Duolingo and other AIs (such as ChatGPT) in their cuPortfolio. The assignment was designed to facilitate experiential learning opportunities through AI and stimulate reflection and integration of theoretical knowledge. The final project, situated within a storytelling narrative, asked students to produce a curation of their most significant learning experiences or ‘ah ha’ moments from this project. This session will share the assignment design and rubric, reflect on the outcomes, and provide student examples.
