{"id":11385,"date":"2018-01-17T15:50:06","date_gmt":"2018-01-17T20:50:06","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/teachinglearning\/?post_type=cu_people&#038;p=11385"},"modified":"2026-05-06T13:29:02","modified_gmt":"2026-05-06T17:29:02","slug":"james-mcgowan","status":"publish","type":"cu_people","link":"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/tls\/people\/james-mcgowan\/","title":{"rendered":"James McGowan"},"content":{"rendered":"<header class=\"mb-6 cu-pageheader cu-component-updated md:mb-12\">\n    <h1 class=\"cu-prose-first-last font-semibold !mt-2 mb-4 md:mb-6 text-3xl md:text-4xl lg:text-5xl lg:leading-[3.5rem] relative after:absolute after:h-px after:bottom-0 pb-5 after:w-10 after:bg-cu-red after:left-px\">\n                    \n             \n                \n            <\/h1>\n\n    \n    <\/header>\n\n\n\n<p>James McGowan, a professor of music theory and composition, won a 2013 <a href=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/tls\/awards-and-grants\/internal-awards\/new-faculty-excellence-in-teaching-award\/\">New Faculty Excellence in Teaching Award<\/a> for his work on a pedagogical application to improve music skills.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The app, which is an online ear training software, allows students anywhere to build onto their learning by embracing different musical styles and creating levels that fit with current curriculum.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In the classroom, James diverges from his virtual teaching expertise and focuses on a one-on-one approach with his students to hone their musical talent.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Calling teaching \u201cone of the most critical jobs I have,\u201d he stresses that his classes are a place for students to discover their passion for music in a supportive environment. As a music theorist, pianist and composer, James manages to effortlessly instill the same commitment and passion he has for music in his students.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In 2020, James was <a href=\"https:\/\/newsroom.carleton.ca\/2020\/announcing-university-chair-teaching-innovation\/\">appointed the Carleton University Chair in Teaching Innovation<\/a>. With this award, he plans to create and support a network of like-minded instructors, students and staff using the principles of Performative Learning and Artistic Communities of Engagement (PLACE).
