His critical teaching problem was how to provide an accessible, low-stakes resource to ensure every student felt confident and prepared before starting. Previous instructor-made videos were often overly complicated, failing to distinguish between theoretical explanations and necessary practical steps.

To solve this, Prof. Smith, with funding from our Course Transformation Fund, collaborated with the Experiential Learning Hub team. They created the Chem Lab Primer video series —a professional, engaging tool featuring short edits and funky music, focusing only on the essential practical information: directions to the lab, learning objectives and step-by-step instructions. Students now use this resource to visualize the process ahead of time, turning complex workflow problems into a manageable, sustainable teaching asset.

Kahente Horn-Miller: Filming Wa’ötši’gwa:to’ – The Virtual Seneca Longhouse Field Trip

Kahente Horn-Miller faced the fundamental teaching problem of making Haudenosaunee culture and worldviews accessible and relevant across various disciplines when in-person field trips are impossible. The 360-cinematic content was carefully crafted to welcome students as visitors, guiding them through protocols like the Ceremony at the Edge of the Forest and inviting them into the replica Longhouse. The experience serves as a powerful low-barrier entry point into VR, offering students the opportunity to be present in the culture and sparking valuable discussion across topics from governance to architecture.

Ian Wereley: From Idea to (Virtual) Reality – Designing a ‘Choose Your Own Adventure’ Field Trip

Prof. Ian Wereley faced the challenge of translating a high-impact field trip experience for a large online course of 150 students. He envisioned a virtual visit to the Canada Science and Technology Museum but needed a way to navigate the complex technical and pedagogical requirements of making that vision a reality.

Partnering with the Experiential Learning Hub, Prof. Wereley designed a comprehensive framework that involved multi-site filming and complex coordination between museum and university teams. The solution was an innovative, “choose your own adventure” interactive platform built using H5P. This digital field trip has since become a keystone element of the course; student feedback identifies it as the most enjoyed activity in the curriculum, successfully bridging the gap between students and their community through meaningful experiential learning.

Iain McKinnell: Visualizing the Life of the Cell

Presenting the complex, multi-step metabolic pathways within the cell in limited class time often presents a significant teaching challenge. The goal is to faithfully tell the story of the life of a cell while avoiding unnecessary detail that can overwhelm students.

To address this gap, Iain McKinnell reached out to the Experiential Learning Hub to produce Life’s Key Concepts – a series of short, dynamic media pieces. Each video is a visually accessible and concise description of a key aspect of cell function. Students now use these resources to effectively support their studies, boosting confidence and preparedness by providing a focused look at the most valuable knowledge.
