lang=\"EN-CA\" xml:lang=\"EN-CA\" data-contrast=\"auto\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW260037392 BCX0\">Participants in the Preparing to Teach certificate will learn about and gain hands-on experience with a range of teaching and assessment methods and&nbsp;teaching techniques for managing large and small classes, and will explore approaches to address teaching and learning issues particular to their disciplines.&nbsp;<\/span><\/span><span class=\"EOP SCXW260037392 BCX0\" data-ccp-props=\"{}\">&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Although informed by theory, the focus will be on teaching practice. Participants will develop new course materials and try out various teaching approaches within a supportive peer cohort.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong class=\"myprefix-text-bold\">Please note:<\/strong> Participation in the certificate is ineligible for <a href=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/deputyprovost\/faculty-affairs\/teaching-assistants\/\">paid pedagogical training <\/a>for TAs. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"upcoming-cohorts\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Upcoming Cohorts<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Fall 2026<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Schedule:\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Weeks 1-8 and 10<strong>: Thursdays 1 &#8211; 4 p.m. from September 17 until November 26<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Week 9 (microteaching): <strong>week of November 16 &#8211; 20<\/strong> (day\/time TBD)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Modality: In-person<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Applications open: July 30, 2026<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Applications close: September 3, 2026<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Decisions communicated no later than: September 8, 2026<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Brightspace page and communications launch for the program: One week prior to start of course<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong class=\"myprefix-text-bold\">Winter 2027<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Information regarding the availability of a Winter 2027 cohort will be made available on this webpage by November 2026.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><em>*NOTE: registration in PTT requires a $50 cash deposit, which is returned in full upon successful completion of the program.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"program-learning-outcomes\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Program Learning Outcomes<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>By the end of this program, you will be able to:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Design a syllabus for a course in your discipline that exemplifies the principles of constructive alignment<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Construct a lesson plan and deliver a teaching demonstration (microteach) that implements learner-centred approaches<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Articulate a personal philosophy of teaching that adheres to the features characteristic of a \u201cteaching philosophy statement\u201d and which is informed by educational theory<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"program-requirements\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Program Requirements<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>To earn the certificate, participants are expected to:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Actively participate in all* sessions<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Provide constructive feedback to peers<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Complete the required readings and other assigned media sources between sessions<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Prepare and submit three assignments by the indicated due dates\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Assignment 1: Teaching Philosophy Statement<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Assignment 2: Microteaching Demonstration and Microteaching Reflection<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Assignment 3: Annotated Course Syllabus<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>*Please note:<\/strong> This program is based on a high degree of interactive learning; absences from class meetings will affect your ability to contribute to forthcoming sessions. For this reason, only one absence during the 10-week period is allowed.
