We recorded the\u00a0sessions so you can watch them when you have time.<\/p>\n<p>The assessment sessions cover a wide range of topics related to assessment in higher education and bring a unique perspective from each of the\u00a0EDC&#8217;s educational development, educational technology and instructional design groups.\u00a0From planning and implementing to feedback and grading, we hope these sessions answer some questions you many have about assessment and spark some ideas that you can incorporate into your teaching practice. Assessment Planning: Why, When, What?<\/span><\/span><\/strong><span class=\"s1\"><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><br \/>\n<\/span><span class=\"s1\">In this first of four sessions, EDC instructional designer Maristela Petrovic-Dzerdz tackled the fundamentals of this complex topic from a course design perspective, while answering the following questions:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul class=\"ul1\">\n<li class=\"li5\"><span class=\"s1\">Why assess?<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"li5\"><span class=\"s1\">When in the process of course design should we design assessment?<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"li5\"><span class=\"s1\">What should we consider when designing assessment?<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"li5\"><span class=\"s1\">When in the course should we perform assessment and for what purpose?<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"li5\"><span class=\"s1\">What type of learning should we assess?<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p class=\"p4\"><span class=\"s1\">You&#8217;ll finish the session with refreshed ideas on a range of assessment categories, principles and purposes based on the most widely used strategies in course design.<\/span><span class=\"s1\"><br \/>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/carleton.ca\/edc\/wp-content\/uploads\/Assessment-Planning-Assessment-Workshop-1.pptx\">Download the PowerPoint slides<\/a>.<br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<div class=\"content__video\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/MtZB6sHs09U?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/div>\n<p class=\"p1\"><strong><span class=\"s2\"><span class=\"s3\">2. How To Assess? Live and Online Assessment Strategies<\/span><\/span><\/strong><span class=\"s1\"><strong><br \/>\n<\/strong><\/span><span class=\"s1\">In this second of four sessions, EDC Educational Technology Consultant, Kirk Davies, analyzed several assessment strategies that can be implemented both in live and online courses, including:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul class=\"ul1\">\n<li class=\"li5\"><span class=\"s1\">Formative in-class assessment (clickers)<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"li5\"><span class=\"s1\">Group projects<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"li5\"><span class=\"s1\">Peer review<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"li5\"><span class=\"s1\">Submitting assignments<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"li5\"><span class=\"s1\">ePortfolios and blogs<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p class=\"p4\"><span class=\"s1\">We also discussed possible challenges and concerns attributed to online assessment, including plagiarism, timing and technology.<\/span><span class=\"s1\"><br \/>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/carleton.ca\/edc\/wp-content\/uploads\/How-to-Assess-Assessment-Workshop-2.pptx\">Download the PowerPoint slides<\/a>.<br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<div class=\"content__video\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/ZBLOR156oMM?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/div>\n<p><strong><span class=\"s2\"><span class=\"s3\">3. Digital Feedback: For Students and Instructors<\/span><\/span><\/strong><span class=\"s1\"><strong><br \/>\n<\/strong><\/span><span class=\"s1\">In this third\u00a0session on assessment, EDC Educational Technology Consultant, Ryan Kuhne, looked at digital strategies for providing feedback, by both students on the course and by instructors on submitted assignments.\u00a0Providing feedback helps instructors improve their teaching and helps students improve their learning.\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"s1\">Topics covered include:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul class=\"ul1\">\n<li class=\"li5\"><span class=\"s1\">The purpose of and motivation behind feedback<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"li5\"><span class=\"s1\">Dimensions: timing, amount, mode and audience<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"li5\"><span class=\"s1\">For students<\/span>\n<ul class=\"ul2\">\n<li class=\"li5\"><span class=\"s1\">Providing digital feedback on assignments (text, drawing, audio, video)<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"li5\"><span class=\"s1\">Creating course checkpoints<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li class=\"li5\"><span class=\"s1\">For instructors<\/span>\n<ul class=\"ul2\">\n<li class=\"li5\"><span class=\"s1\">Learning analytics<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"li5\"><span class=\"s1\">Midterm feedback evaluation<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p class=\"p4\"><span class=\"s1\">Rich feedback opportunities can be integrated into your course without adding to your workload. Grading: The Final Stage of Assessment<\/span><\/span><\/strong><span class=\"s1\"><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p4\"><span class=\"s1\">This final session on assessment is designed to promote an understanding of grading along with providing strategies and examples to enhance your grading skills.\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"s1\">EDC Senior Teaching Development Associate and 3M award winner, Dr. Anthony Marini, explored the role grading plays in communicating student learning and highlighted techniques that can make that communication clear and accurate.\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"s1\">We also explored the role of feedback within the grading process and discussed methods for determining pass\/fail or credit\/no credit decisions.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p4\"><span class=\"s1\">A general outline for the session is as follows:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul class=\"ul1\">\n<li class=\"li5\"><span class=\"s1\">Identify and address key issues related to grading<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"li5\"><span class=\"s1\">Explore alternative models to current grading practices<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"li5\"><span class=\"s1\">Discuss how to communicate grading results clearly and accurately<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span class=\"s1\"> <a href=\"http:\/\/carleton.ca\/edc\/wp-content\/uploads\/Grading-Assessment-Workshop-4.ppt\">Download the PowerPoint slides<\/a>.<br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<div class=\"content__video\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/2lEgFthp7-I?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/div>\n<h2 class=\"p1\">Upcoming Events<\/h2>\n<p class=\"p1\">The EDC offers a variety of events year-round, from workshops and roundtables to training sessions, as well as an annual teaching and learning symposium.
