{"id":18306,"date":"2016-02-17T16:16:36","date_gmt":"2016-02-17T21:16:36","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/carleton.ca\/edc\/?p=18306"},"modified":"2021-08-13T10:13:28","modified_gmt":"2021-08-13T14:13:28","slug":"freedom-to-read-week","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/tls\/2016\/freedom-to-read-week\/","title":{"rendered":"Freedom to Read Week"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Carleton University Library is celebrating its 3rd Annual Freedom to Read Week February 21-25 and we\u2019d like you to join us!<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.freedomtoread.ca\/freedom-to-read-week\/#.VsTgmHQrKX0\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Freedom to Read Week<\/a> is an annual event that encourages Canadians to think about and reaffirm their commitment to freedom of expression and intellectual freedom, guaranteed under the Charter of Rights and Freedoms. At Carleton, we are currently planning a series of events throughout the week.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Readings from Banned and Challenged Materials<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>We will be hosting two sets of readings from banned and challenged materials by members of the Carleton community. The readings will take place Wednesday, Feb. 24 and Thursday, Feb. 25 from noon &#8211; 1 p.m. in our main floor Reading Room.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Panel Discussion<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>We will also host a panel discussion on issues involving freedom of expression, censorship, and banned\/challenged books. Moderated by Susan Harada, Associate Director of the School of Journalism and Communications, this event will encourage a collegial conversation on these topics. The panel discussion will be held in room ML252 on Thursday, Feb. 25 from 1:30 &#8211; 2:30 p.m. Light refreshments will be served. Panelists for this event will include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Andrew Potter, Editor of the Ottawa Citizen<\/li>\n<li>Monique D\u00e9sormeaux, Deputy Chief Executive Officer of the Ottawa Public Library<\/li>\n<li>Kathy Clark, Ottawa-area Children\u2019s Author<\/li>\n<li>Hossein Raeesi, visiting scholar as part of the Scholars at Risk network<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Need more information? A meditation on book-burning as an attempt to deprive people of information, and how books are more subtly \u201cburnt\u201d in our own time. Exhibition on display around the corner from our main floor Reading Room Monday, Feb. 22 through Friday, Feb. 26.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Freedom to Read Mugshot Photo Booth<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Monday, Feb. 22, from noon \u2013 2 p.m. in the Library (near Starbucks) and Tuesday, Feb.\u00a023 from noon \u2013 2 p.m. in the Uni Centre Galleria, come have your mug shot taken with a challenged or banned book in our unique photo booth to help promote Freedom to Read Week at Carleton.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Carleton University Library is celebrating its 3rd Annual Freedom to Read Week February 21-25 and we\u2019d like you to join us!
