We\u2019re still here\u2014here to talk, here to listen, here to help you sort out issues, here to help you bring your teaching to the next level.<\/p>\n<p>Maybe you love teaching online (or you&#8217;re at least cautiously optimistic about it), or maybe you feel like you\u2019ve spent the past month patching one hole after the next in a leaky boat that you\u2019re desperately trying to row to shore. Either way, we\u2019re here for you. We (still) offer <a href=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/edc\/events\/\">workshops<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/edc\/faculty-and-instructors\/faculty-teaching-mentors\/\">mentorship<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/teachinglearning\/online-course-design-guide\/\">course design support<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/teachinglearning\/educational-technology-tools-for-online-delivery\/\">tech support<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/teachinglearning\/online-teaching-resource-guide\/\">more<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Before you tackle that pile of midterm grading or switch into full hibernation mode during this Fall Reading Week, take some time to <strong>rest and reflect<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Check your bandwidth<\/strong>. Are you struggling to keep up? If your course is feeling overwhelming, try to cut down\/out any content or ungraded activities that don\u2019t contribute to your learning outcomes. An empty \u201ccatch-up\u201d class at the end of the semester might give everybody some much-needed breathing room.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Check your students\u2019 bandwidth<\/strong>. Are you assigning multiple hours of lectures, dozens of pages of readings, and multiple assessments every week? Be realistic about your <a href=\"https:\/\/cat.wfu.edu\/resources\/tools\/estimator2\/\">course workload<\/a>. If your course outline allows for it, make your assessments more flexible (e.g., \u201cbest of\u201d structure). And remember to keep recorded lectures short!<\/li>\n<li><strong>Pay attention to what\u2019s working<\/strong>. Have you noticed your students are contributing to discussions more than in face-to-face classes? Are cuLearn quizzes saving you time and energy? Get <a href=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/edc\/teachingresources\/administrative-pedagogy\/feedback-on-teaching\/\">feedback from your students<\/a> or do a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.universityaffairs.ca\/career-advice\/careers-cafe\/taking-stock-the-importance-of-teaching-self-reflections\/\">self-scan<\/a> to help you pinpoint what\u2019s working (or not) so you know what to keep and what to toss. Consider sharing your successes on <a href=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/teachinglearning\/blog\/\">our blog<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Make necessary changes now<\/strong>. Are you flooded with emails from confused students? Is your weekly marking unmanageable? Take action sooner rather than later. Clarify assignment descriptions or add an \u201cAsk your Instructor\u201d forum to keep your inbox clear(er). Use a <a href=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/culearnsupport\/instructors\/assignments\/#sect5.1\">rubric<\/a> or <a href=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/culearnsupport\/instructors\/assignments\/#sect5.2\">marking guide<\/a> to grade assignments\u2014it&#8217;ll pay off, we promise. We have tips, tricks and tools galore to help make your life easier.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Winter is coming<\/strong>. We don\u2019t want to stress you out, but the winter term is coming and <a href=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/provost\/wp-content\/uploads\/Recommendation-Winter-2021-200827-final.pdf\">it\u2019s going to be online<\/a>. Be strategic\u2014what have you learned or done this term that you can integrate or <a href=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/culearnsupport\/instructors\/importing-previously-taught-content\/\">copy<\/a> to next term? Use our handy <a href=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/teachinglearning\/online-course-design-guide\/\">course design<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/teachinglearning\/online-course-design-guide\/\">guide<\/a> to get a head-start on winter planning and this <a href=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/edc\/teachingresources\/new-faculty-members-and-contract-instructors\/preparing-to-teach-your-first-course-at-carleton\/#sect4\">checklist<\/a> to gauge your progress. Our top tip: <a href=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/teachinglearning\/wp-content\/uploads\/Transition-to-Online-Teaching-Infographic.pdf\">keep it simple<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Remember, you\u2019re not alone<\/strong>. Teaching can be isolating in \u201cnormal\u201d times\u2014these days even more so.
