Dear Graduate Student,<\/p>\n

The journey to getting a doctorate is filled with so many lessons, contours, and surprises<\/p>\n

Permit me to take you on an excursion with me<\/p>\n

From the starry-eyed PhD orientation student to the wiser PhD holder<\/p>\n

It has been an exhilarating experience<\/p>\n

Revealing the presence of more resilience and grit than acknowledged<\/p>\n

Despite the odds, I made it through, and this is my victory song<\/p>\n

Navigating landmines, I never saw coming<\/p>\n

From the loss of my greatest cheerleader – my dad<\/p>\n

To the end of a relationship, I once thought defined me<\/p>\n

To the forced solitude and loneliness of Covid 19<\/p>\n

I learned that life happens, and fortitude is a forerunner to celebration<\/p>\n

Through it all I kept the faith<\/p>\n

I have made friends along the way and lost some too<\/p>\n

Been blessed to be mentored by so many great people<\/p>\n

Received help from far and wide<\/p>\n

And found new cheerleaders as I burned the candle at both ends<\/p>\n

I have learned to count my blessings<\/p>\n

To see beauty in the process and to wear my battle scars with pride<\/p>\n

Yes, I am more than a conqueror<\/p>\n

If I made it through, you too will<\/p>\n

Get up each day and keep chipping away<\/p>\n

Take a break if you need to, but never give up<\/p>\n

Cry if you must, after all you are only human<\/p>\n

But remember to wipe your tears and get back up again<\/p>\n

Whatever you do, don\u2019t forget to enjoy the process<\/p>\n

Find joy in the little things and celebrate milestones<\/p>\n

Leverage on the resources at your disposal<\/p>\n

Make new friends while in transit<\/p>\n

Explore new places and embrace the adventure<\/p>\n

Congratulations on getting to this point<\/p>\n

See you at the finish line.<\/p>\n
