In July 2020, the House of Representatives rejected ratifying CETA; however, the EU was not officially notified of the vote. Political parties such as the Movement for Social Democracy, the AKEL party and the Greens oppose CETA\u2019s ratification. Opponents argue that CETA will have an adverse impact on the agricultural sector and food safety, with the introduction of GMOs, and will set up a &#8220;parallel justice system&#8221; through the implementation of the investor-dispute settlement provisions. Opposition from agricultural interests largely focuses on geographical indicators, <span style=\"font-size: 16px;\">especially for Cypriot halloumi cheese. Large agricultural interests in the dairy industry have indicated a willingness to support CETA\u2019s ratification if CETA recognizes a GI on halloumi cheese. CSO and NGOs opponents include Young Friends of the Earth, Cyprus.<\/span><\/p>\n<h4>Trade data<\/h4>\n<p>Cyprus had a trade deficit in goods trade with Canada of \u20ac10 million in 2021 <a href=\"https:\/\/ec.europa.eu\/eurostat\/statistics-explained\/index.php?title=Archive:Canada-EU_-_international_trade_in_goods_statistics#EU_and_Canada_in_world_trade_in_goods\">(Eurostat).<\/a> However, imports from Canada grew from \u20ac10 million to \u20ac13 million in 2021, which is 0.4% of Cyprus&#8217;s imports from outside the EU. Exports to Canada also grew from \u20ac2 million to \u20ac4 million in 2021, 0.1% of Cyprus&#8217;s extra-EU exports <a href=\"https:\/\/www.international.gc.ca\/country-pays\/cyprus-chypre\/relations.aspx?lang=eng\">(Global Affairs Canada)<\/a>. Canada-Cyprus bilateral goods trade (imports + exports) grew by \u20ac6 million, or 66.7%, between 2016-2019 (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.international.gc.ca\/trade-commerce\/economist-economiste\/statistics-statistiques\/overview_canada_eu-apercu_canada_ue.aspx?lang=eng\">Statistics Canada<\/a>).<\/p>\n<h4>Sources<\/h4>\n<p>Connolly, A.
