To recognize this day, please join us from 2:30-4:00PM for a discussion of the ways transphobia and transmisogyny manifest on university campuses, and how faculty, staff, and students can work to make their classrooms and study spaces safer and more welcoming places for their trans colleagues and peers. This panel will also include discussion on the deeper meaning that solidarity between transgender people and their cisgender allies holds for our communities. <strong>Fill out the form below to receive a link to the Zoom webinar.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Content Warning:\u00a0<\/strong>This event will contain discussion of the systemic oppression and violence faced by marginalized communities.<\/p>\n<div class=\"slideme\"><dl class=\"slideme__list\"><dt class=\"slideme__term\"><a href=\"#slideme-about-the-panelists\" aria-expanded=\"false\" aria-controls=\"slideme-about-the-panelists\" class=\"slideme__heading slideme__trigger\">About the panelists<\/a><\/dt><dd class=\"slideme__description\" id=\"slideme-about-the-panelists\" aria-hidden=\"true\"><p><\/p>\n<p><strong>Moderator &#8211; Dr. Julia Sinclair-Palm<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Dr. Julia Sinclair-Palm is an Assistant Professor in Childhood and Youth Studies in the Institute of Interdisciplinary Studies program at Carleton University. They recently co-edited (with Jen Gilbert) a special issue of the journal <em>Sex Education<\/em> on \u201cTrans Youth in Education\u201d. In her research, she examines how trans youth forge new identities, imagine futures and navigate structural inequalities in the midst of these larger, and sometimes restrictive narratives about trans lives.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Mikayla LaFortune<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Mikayla LaFortune (they\/them) has been working as a coordinator for the CUSA Gender and Sexuality Resource Centre since 2019 to build community connections on campus and in the local 2SLGBTQ+ community. More recently, they have been particularly passionate about holding community-building events virtually to foster connection during the COVID-19 pandemic. Mikayla is also pursuing a Bachelor of Social Work and working as a teaching assistant in the American Sign Language department at Carleton University. When they\u2019re not working or studying, Mikayla loves to bring their dog on hikes, embroider, garden, send snail mail, and read queer literature.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Jade Petgrave-Cayley<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Jade Petgrave-Cayley (they\/them) has been working as the Program Coordinator at the Gender and Sexuality Resource Centre since 2019, where they&#8217;ve been creating community space for queer and trans sex education, Blackness, existing on campus and so much more. Recently, they&#8217;ve been focusing their equity work in youth research by creating and leading an Equity Department for a pan-Canadian research project, Pivot Canada. When not working, they enjoy roller blading, cooking for their pals, and going on picnics.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Keegan Prempeh<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Keegan Prempeh is a Black, non-binary Sagittarius on a journey of self-discovery, radical transformation and healing. They live on Algonquin territory in Odawa. Guided by womanism, collectivism and the pursuit of social justice, Keegan hopes to foster meaningful connections to build community.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Jaime Sadgrove<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Jaime Sadgrove (they\/them) is a trans activist and advocate with a passion for storytelling. Jaime works at Carleton as the Trans &amp; Non-Binary Inclusion Coordinator. In this role, Jaime works on infrastructural projects and provides consulting and advocacy support in order to make the university\u2019s campus a less oppressive space for trans students, faculty, and staff. When not working, they can be found listening to a podcast, cooking, or making fancy coffees. Jaime lives in Ottawa on unceded Algonquin territory.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Kaeden Seburn<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Kaeden Seburn (They\/He) is a nonbinary, transmasculine, white settler, a bachelor of social work student at Carleton University and a trans community organizer, activist and educator from unceded Algonquin territory. Kaeden is an independent educator and consultant, a co-founder and facilitator of SAEFTY Ottawa, Community Engagement Coordinator at the Ten Oaks Project and the Trans and Gender Diverse Student Support Coordinator for the Ottawa Carleton District School Board.
