Featuring Susan Stryker\u2019s new book, Changing Gender<\/em> \u2013 a provocative, genre-bending call to reconsider the story we tell about gender itself \u2013 and Laura Horak\u2019s new book Trans Cinema: Making Communities, Identities, and Worlds<\/em> \u2013 an exciting introduction to cinema by the trans creators who are innovating filmmaking to imagine a more inclusive world.<\/p>\n

Susan Stryker\u2019s<\/strong> historical research, theoretical writings, media-making, activism, and academic field-building activities have helped shape the conversation on trans issues since the early 1990s. Stryker retired from the University of Arizona in 2020 and currently holds a distinguished visiting appointment at Stanford University’s Michelle Clayman Institute for Gender Research. She is the author of many academic and general audience works, including Transgender History<\/em>.<\/p>\n

Laura Horak<\/strong> is Professor of Film Studies at Carleton University in Ottawa, Ontario, and founder of the award-winning Transgender Media Portal. She is author of Girls Will Be Boys: Cross-Dressed Women, Lesbians, and American Cinema.<\/em><\/p>\n

Cara Tierney<\/strong> is a Scottish\/Irish\/Italian\/white\/settler, trans* creative\/educator\/consultant\/curator whose work sits at the intersection of art and education, oriented toward collective liberation. Currently a prof in the University of Ottawa\u2019s Visual Arts department, over the last 20 years they have delivered and designed both arts, and arts-based workshops on unceded Algonquin land, in and around so-called Ottawa, approaching their work as an endless series of moments from which to learn, bridge creativity, communities, and share knowledge in the service of social transformation.<\/p>\n
