When transgender people create audiovisual media, rather than simply being represented in it, their worldmaking helps change our collective world. Under the directorship of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/transmedialab\/people\/laura-horak\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dr. Laura Horak<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, the<\/span><b> Transgender Media Lab <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">at<\/span><b> Carleton University<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> investigates the aesthetic, political, and cultural work of audiovisual media created by transgender, Two Spirit, nonbinary, intersex, and gender-nonconforming filmmakers and artists. As part of that investigation, the lab is building the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.transgendermediaportal.org\/\">Transgender Media Portal<\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a collaborative digital tool that will enable new ways of analyzing these works and their circulation while making information about them available to trans arts communities and the public.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>The Transgender Media Lab (TML) is currently recruiting a PhD student to conduct original dissertation research <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">on some aspect of transgender, Two Spirit, nonbinary, intersex and\/or gender-nonconforming film- and video-making in Canada or the United States and to contribute to the development of the Transgender Media Portal. Potential dissertation topics include: contemporary trans web series, Indigenous trans and Two-Spirit filmmaking, Black and trans-of-colour filmmaking, trans-made experimental animation, regional trans film and video movements, the history of Counting Past 2 (one of the first transgender film festivals, founded in Toronto in 1997), or the theoretical, computational, and ethical aspects related to building the Transgender Media Portal and cultivating its community of contributors. Note that our lab focuses on audiovisual work <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">created by<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> trans people.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In addition to the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/graduate.carleton.ca\/financial-assistance\/admissions-funding\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">admissions funding package<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/gradstudents.carleton.ca\/awards-and-funding\/internal-awards\/#TravelResearch\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">travel bursaries<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and awards offered by Carleton University, the TML PhD fellow will be guaranteed the following package in Year 1, which will be renewable for up to four years:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A scholarship of $500\/semester (up to $1,500\/year)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Two semester-long research assistantships (of 130 hours\/semester x $41.70\/hr x 2 semesters = $10,842)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Up to $2,000 funding for TML-related travel for research or conferences<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If the PhD student is a Canadian citizen or permanent resident, they are also eligible to receive a $2,000 top-up fellowship from Carleton University in Year 1.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The TML PhD Fellowship is available to students beginning their studies in Fall 2020 in either:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/culturalmediations\/prospective-students\/\"><b>Cultural Mediations PhD program<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in Carleton\u2019s Institute for Comparative Studies in Literature, Art and Culture (ICSLAC) or\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/sjc\/communication\/graduate-studies\/phd-program-information-admissions\/\"><b>Communication PhD program<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in Carleton\u2019s School of Journalism and Communication.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Contact Dr. Paul Theberge (<\/span><a href=\"ma&#105;&#108;&#x74;&#x6f;&#x3a;&#x70;au&#108;&#46;&#x74;&#x68;&#x65;&#x62;er&#103;&#101;&#64;&#x63;&#x61;&#x72;&#x6c;et&#111;&#110;&#x2e;&#x63;&#x61;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">pa&#117;&#108;&#46;&#x74;&#x68;&#x65;&#x62;er&#103;&#101;&#64;&#x63;&#x61;&#x72;&#x6c;et&#111;&#110;&#46;&#x63;&#x61;<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">) for more information about the Cultural Mediations PhD program and Dr. Chris Russill (<\/span><a href=\"&#x6d;&#97;&#x69;&#x6c;t&#x6f;&#58;c&#x68;&#114;i&#x73;&#46;&#x72;&#x75;s&#x73;&#105;l&#x6c;&#64;c&#x61;&#114;&#x6c;&#x65;&#116;&#x6f;&#x6e;&#46;&#x63;&#97;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#99;&#104;&#x72;&#x69;&#115;&#46;&#x72;&#x75;&#115;&#115;&#x69;&#x6c;&#108;&#64;&#x63;&#x61;&#114;&#108;&#x65;&#x74;&#111;&#110;&#x2e;&#x63;&#97;<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">) for more information about the Communications PhD program.
