Closed captions and a <a href=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/filmstudies\/wp-content\/uploads\/Captions-22-03-CMK.txt\">downloadable transcript<\/a> are also available.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/player.vimeo.com\/video\/693981298?h=9eded67ed0\" width=\"640\" height=\"325\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<h2>Bad Trans Objects<\/h2>\n<p>The assumption that more and better images of transgender people are key to achieving transgender equality strains under an emerging contradiction: As the number of \u201cpositive\u201d transgender media objects has increased in the Global North, so too have cultural and legislative hostilities toward transgender people. Arguing that the aesthetics of \u201cgood\u201d trans representation narrow the scope of sexual politics and contribute to trans antagonism, this project investigates the mediated history of trans badness\u2013reclaiming it as a radical trans property that must be embraced to reorient us toward sex and gender liberation.<\/p>\n<h2>Speaker Details<\/h2>\n<p><strong>C\u00e1el M. Keegan <\/strong>is the Fulbright Canada Distinguished Research Chair of Arts and Social Sciences at Carleton University and Associate Professor of Women, Gender, and Sexuality Studies at Grand Valley State University. He is author of <i>Lana and Lilly Wachowski: Sensing Transgender<\/i> (University of Illinois Press, 2018) and co-editor of <i>Somatechnics<\/i> 8.1 and the <i>JCMS<\/i> In Focus dossier, \u201cTransing Cinema and Media Studies.\u201d His writing has also appeared in <i>Genders<\/i>, <i>Queer Studies in Media and Popular Culture<\/i>, <i>Transgender Studies Quarterly<\/i>, <i>Mediekultur<\/i>, <i>The Journal of Homosexuality<\/i>, <i>The Journal of Cinema and Media Studies<\/i>, <i>Film Quarterly<\/i>, and <i>FLOW<\/i>.
