Passion felt at New Sun Conference<\/h4>\n
By Laura Baziuk,\u00a0The Charlatan<\/em>,\u00a0<\/span>March 8, 2007<\/p>\nIt was all about energy at the sixth annual New Sun Conference on Aboriginal Arts at Carleton University.<\/p>\n
A warm, intimate energy was felt by all 150 people in the Minto Centre classroom, says Allan Ryan, a Canadian studies and art history professor, as well as the conference chair.<\/p>\n
\u201cThere\u2019s a feeling in this room,\u201d he says. \u201cThere\u2019s this wonderful mix of native and non-native people, students and non-students, and just people from the community n Ottawa here.\u201d<\/p>\n
The conference promotes aboriginal art through presentations on everything from poetry and film to photography and food. This year the theme is \u201csurvivance,\u201d what Ryan calls native peoples\u2019 empowerment to thrive.<\/p>\n
Ernest Webb\u2014who kicked off the presentations after an opening prayer by Elder Jim Albert, a member of the aboriginal community in Ottawa\u2014agrees that the conference is about energy.<\/p>\n
\u201cIt\u2019s all about sharing,\u201d says Webb, a broadcaster and film producer from Chisasibi, Que. \u201cIt\u2019s an honour to be here. I don\u2019t get many chances to talk about my work.\u201d<\/p>\n
The crowd heard from a wide range of people from Annie Pootoogook, an award-winning visual artist from Cape Dorset, Nunavut, to Marie Routledge, a curator of Inuit art from the National Gallery of Canada.<\/p>\n
\u201cIt provides a broad range of input of what\u2019s going on in the aboriginal arts community,\u201d says Rawlson King of Ottawa, a member of the audience who has attended the last three New Sun conferences.<\/p>\n
\u201cIt brings a lot of different people together.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cIt\u2019s tremendously focused on the visual arts this year,\u201d he adds. \u201cI really like that. It\u2019s important that these stories have a venue.\u201d<\/p>\n
Taima, the Montreal-based musical duo of Elisapie Isaac and Alain Auger, performed songs from their self-titled album as people sipped coffee or munched on dessert after their noon meal in the Fenn Lounge.<\/p>\n
\u201cIt\u2019s nice to be in a small group like this once in a while,\u201d lead singer Isaac tells the crowd.<\/p>\n
The two artists and a third guitarist also soothed the audience with the world premiere performance of \u201cShelter,\u201d a soft, sweet song in French written by Auger.<\/p>\n
In the Minto Centre after lunch, aboriginal curators Barry Ace and Ryan Rice talk about the Aboriginal Curatorial Collective, a collection of artwork by aboriginals, and the need to heighten the profile of aboriginal art in the community at large.<\/p>\n
\u201cIt\u2019s created an incredible network,\u201d says Ace during the presentation. He says sharing the collective works of aboriginal art through its website is a good tool to share news about conferences, employment, writing opportunities and research.<\/p>\n
Isaac returned to talk about her career as a singer-songwriter and to present her film about questioning her identity as an aboriginal.<\/p>\n
Ryan says the conference is a way of affirming aboriginal values within the community while entertaining and enriching the lives of those who present and attend.<\/p>\n
He wants to maintain the conference\u2019s intimate and friendly atmosphere in years to come rather than make it bigger, he adds.<\/p>\n
\u201cI plan this all year,\u201d he says, explaining that he and his wife organize every aspect of the conference from booking the hotels for presenters to wrapping the thank-you gifts.<\/p>\n
\u201cIt\u2019s really exciting and rewarding to be part of.\u201d<\/p>\n
