Vladimir Popov is a\u00a0<\/a><\/span>Principal\u00a0 Researcher in<\/span>\u00a0CEMI RAN (Central Economics and Mathematics Institute of the Russian Academy of Sciences)<\/a>; a leading researcher in RANEPA\u00a0(<\/a>Russian Academy of National Economy and Public Administration);<\/a>\u00a0a professor emeritus\u00a0at the\u00a0New Economic School<\/a> in Moscow; and an\u00a0adjunct research professor\u00a0at the Institute of European and Russian Studies\u00a0at Carleton University\u00a0<\/a>in Ottawa.<\/p>\n

In 2017-21 he was a Research Director on Economics and Politics in the Dialogue of Civilizations Research Institute<\/a> in Berlin. In\u00a0 <\/span>2009-15 he worked in\u00a0DESA, UN,<\/a> as a Senior Economic Affairs Officer and Interregional Adviser. He participated in preparing\u00a0World Economic Vulnerability Monitors<\/a> in 2009-10,\u00a0<\/strong>World Economic and Social Survey\u00a0(WESS) for\u00a02010,\u00a02011,\u00a02012,\u00a02013,\u00a02014-15<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0World Economic Situation and Prospects (WESP)\u00a02015\u00a0and\u00a02016<\/a>.\u00a0As an Interregional Advisor in the UN in 2010-2014 he took part in capacity building missions, workshops and conferences in Bhutan, China, Georgia, Kazakhstan,\u00a0Kyrgyzstan, Moldova, Russia, Tajikistan, Ukraine, Uzbekistan, Vietnam. He wrote a number of papers and policy notes on general macroeconomic policy issues (managing trade and financial shocks, exchange rates, foreign exchange reserves and sovereign wealth funds), as well as on country specific issues (Moldova, Tajikistan, Uzbekistan).<\/p>\n

In 1996-98 he was a Senior Research Fellow in the World Institute for Development Economics Research of the United Nations University\u00a0(WIDER\/UNU<\/a>)\u00a0in\u00a0Helsinki,\u00a0Finland, co-directing a project “Transition Strategies, Alternatives and Outcomes”.<\/p>\n

In the 1990s – 2010s he was also teaching at the New Economic School and the Academy of National Economy (Moscow), at Queen’s University, University of Toronto and Carleton University in Canada, Helsinki School of Economics in Finland, University of Kaiserslautern in Germany, Hebrew University of Jerusalem in Israel; he was holding research positions in Italy, Japan, Sweden, US.<\/p>\n

He taught\u00a0courses<\/a>\u00a0in\u00a0Macroeconomics-1;\u00a0Macroeconomics-2; International economics; Comparative economic systems;\u00a0European economic integration; Economics of transition; International aspects of economic transition;\u00a0<\/strong>Russian economy in transition, Economic history of China, Russia and the West.<\/p>\n

He published extensively on world economy and development issues (editor of 6 books, author of 10 books and hundreds of articles, including in Journal of Comparative Economics, World Development<\/em>, Comparative <\/em>Economic Studies, New Left Review<\/em>, Cambridge Journal of Economics,<\/em> Seoul Journal of Economics, Asia and the Global Economy, Journal of Asia Pacific Economies, Brazilian Journal of Political Economy, Cliodynamics, <\/em>as well as essays in the media). His books and articles were published in Chinese, English, French, German, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Norwegian, Portuguese, Russian, Spanish, Turkish.<\/p>\n

His 1989-90\u00a0book\u00a0\u201cThe Turning Point\u201d<\/a>\u00a0about the Soviet economy (co-authored with\u00a0N. Shmelev) was published in English by Doubleday\u00a0and also in Russian (\u041d\u0430 \u043f\u0435\u0440\u0435\u043b\u043e\u043c\u0435<\/strong>: \u044d\u043a\u043e\u043d\u043e\u043c\u0438\u0447\u0435\u0441\u043a\u0430\u044f \u043f\u0435\u0440\u0435\u0441\u0442\u0440\u043e\u0439\u043a\u0430<\/strong> \u0432 \u0421\u0421\u0421\u0420. \u0418\u0437\u0434\u0430\u0442\u0435\u043b\u044c\u0441\u0442\u0432\u043e \u0410\u041f\u041d<\/strong><\/a>) and Korean.
