What is the Dashboard?

The Dashboard is the first screen you’ll see once you’re logged in to WordPress. It is essentially the control panel for your website, where you will be able to view and edit all content and data that appear on the site.

Getting comfortable navigating the dashboard is important to becoming fluent in using WordPress, and you’ll have lots of chances to practice while working through the modules.

Step-by-Step

Here is how to navigate the back end of your page and locate contents. In this example we will use “Pages”, but the same steps apply to other types of content.

Hover over Pages on the side menu to open more options for pages.
Click on one of the options to navigate to that part of the Dashboard. Clicking All Pages will display all pages that have been created on your site.
Use the filters and search bar to locate specific pages.
Hover over each page title to view a list of options available to the page: Edit, Quick Edit, Trash, View, and Duplicate.

Module 1: The Dashboard

Hello, and welcome back to module 1 of the Basic CMS Training. Last video, you have learned how to log in to the back of your website and access the dashboard. In this video, let’s explore the dashboard.

The Dashboard is essentially the control panel for your website, where you will be able to view and edit all content and data that appear on the site.

As soon as you log in, you will arrive at this dashboard screen with a variety of information, including things like updates, site summaries, Google Analytics information, User Access lists, and more. The contents of this page may vary based on how your site is set up, but generally it’s going to resemble what you see here.

You will also see a side menu, and a top menu. These menus allow you to navigate to any type of content you have on your site, open, and edit it.

For example, if you want to manage your pages, simply hover over “Pages”. You will see a sub-menu with options to view “All Pages”, “Add New”, and view “Page Categories”. For now, let’s go to “All Pages”.

All your pages are listed here. To locate specific pages, you can use these filters, which allow you to see posts that are “published”, “draft”, or “cornerstone content”. You can also search for specific pages by name using this search bar.

Now if you hover over a page title, you will see a list of options to manage that page. We will go more in depth into managing content in the next video.

Try It Out!

Now that you have learned about the Dashboard and how to navigate the back end of your website, time to try it out!

Visit your site’s dashboard and see what information is listed
Open the list of all pages. Look for pages that are:
1. Published
2. Draft
Look for pages that contains the word “contact”
