Hello, and welcome to the CMS training series. Whether you are a new CMS user or are returning to this site to look for specific information, the CMS Help Centre has everything you need to know to edit and manage your Carleton website.

What is CMS?

The simplest way to explain it is that CMS is a software that provides you with the tools you need to add content to a website. Our CMS training teaches you how to use those tools.

CMS or CCMS?

CMS is a Content Management System. CCMS is the Carleton content management system. This system uses WordPress software to manage web content, such as pages, posts, and media.

About CMS Training

The CMS Training is divided into 2 series: Basic Training and Advanced Training.

The Basic Training series will introduce you to all basic functionalities of CMS, such as logging in, creating pages and posts, adding texts and images, and more. Beginners are encouraged to complete all Basic Training modules to obtain fundamental knowledge about using CMS.

The Advanced Training series is for those who have completed the Basic Training, and covers more advanced functionalities of CMS, such as forms and newsletters. The Advanced series is also arranged by modules, but you can jump to specific content by using the side navigation bar or the Index on the Advanced Training landing page.

Each training topic consists of the following:

  • Step-by-Step: step-by-step instructions for each topic, formatted in bullet points.
  • Video and Transcript: narrated videos which provide a walkthrough of the topic. A transcript is also provided.
  • Try It Out!: a series of tasks designed to test your knowledge.

CMS Training Playground

The CMS Training Playground is a site where you can practice with CMS without worrying about making changes to your own site. Feel free to test out features, move things around, and generally just explore the tools CMS has to offer. Access the site by signing in with your Carleton credentials. Please note that you need to be connected to Carleton’s Virtual Private Network (VPN) in order to access the CMS Training Playground.

If you don’t have access to the Playground, contact Web Services to request access.

Browser Recommendation

Carleton CMS is an online tool that is accessible through any modern web browser. For optimum performance standards and speed we recommend Google Chrome.

Google’s Chrome browser is one of the fastest, most reliable browsers available and our number one recommendation. Download Chrome
