It defines three levels of compliance &#8211; A, AA and AAA. Level A equates to basic website accessibility and level AAA is the highest level.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"aoda-and-carleton\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">AODA and Carleton<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>According to AODA, Carleton is designated as a large public sector organization and the university\u2019s requirements are:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>New internet and web content:&nbsp;<strong>Compliance with Level A by 1 January 2014<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>All* internet and web content**:&nbsp;<strong>Compliance with Level AA by 1 January 2021<br><br><\/strong><em>* excluding captions on live videos and audio descriptions for pre-recorded videos<br><br><\/em><em>** published after January 1, 2012<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Sites published before 2012 in older systems are out of scope. \u201cNew websites\u201d are those with a new domain name (e.g., carleton.ca\/new or new.carleton.ca&nbsp;) or existing websites that are having a complete overhaul, effectively changing more than half of the website.&nbsp;For example, when our new branded templates are imposed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 id=\"internal-websites\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Internal Websites<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>In Carleton\u2019s designation (large public sector organization) there is no mention of Intranet sites and sites behind logins (for example, Intranet, Carleton Central, internal websites, and the CRM).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In short:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>We are not required to make our internal websites (intranet) AODA complaint<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>However, we must make them complaint so any user can access them<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>We don\u2019t have to modify content posted before 2012.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>If asked, we will need to work with individuals to make the content available to them in an alternate format such as large print or braille.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"making-carleton-websites-accessible\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Making Carleton Websites Accessible<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Web Services manages 550 public websites under one template. This template is currently being redeveloped with accessibility top of mind.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>In order to meet WCAG 2.0 A and AA\u2026<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We have ensured:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Alt text on images we control (thumbnails, icons, buttons, banner images, etc)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Structure is easily distinguishable through visual cues \u2013 proper spacing between paragraphs, headings clearly defined, required fields on forms are clearly indicated<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Styling options are limited \u2013 clients cannot change font size, colour<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Content can be navigated through a keyboard, ensuring no keyboard traps<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Users have the ability to bypass blocks to get to main content<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Features behave as expected (Drop down menus, buttons, form submissions)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Error identification exists on forms<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Contrast requirements are met on images\/text, buttons\/text, text on background<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Users have the ability to resize text<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>There is an easy to use search function<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Keyboard focus is visible<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Consistent identification (labels, checkmarks, buttons, etc.) exissts throughout the sites<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>We have, and will continue to train our clients to create accessible web content, in particular:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Making the page easy to navigate with a keyboard through proper structuring (Use clear and descriptive headings to label sections)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Adding Alt tags for all non-text elements and not using images to convey text<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Providing context for links that is descriptive and behaves in an expected manner (e.g., when opening in a new tab) and create links between pages<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Ensuring proper label identification on forms<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Providing transcripts on all audio and video clips<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 id=\"our-plan\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Our Plan<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Prior to rolling out the new template, each site will go through an accessibility audit. The owner of the website will be provided a report outlining specific areas that are not compliant. Training will be provided, and we will work with clients to fix any accessibility errors.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In order to ensure sites are AODA compliant, we will not make the new site live until those errors are fixed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As for training..<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>A group of 15 key web content creators will be taking a full day training session being provided by a third party<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Web Services will repurpose the content and offer new and improved accessibility training sessions<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>These sessions will be held weekly for all digital content creators at Carleton<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Resources, training material and documentation will be made available on our website<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"in-conclusion\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">In Conclusion<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Accessibility is top of mind. It makes for a better digital experience for everyone.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Our new template will be WCAG 2.0 AA compliant well in time for the deadline<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Ongoing training will be provided to ensure content that is created is compliant<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"details-on-wcag-2-0\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Details on WCAG 2.0<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Below is the WCAG 2.0 Level A and AA
