In this situation, every image has the attribute <em>alt=&#8221;&#8221;<\/em> because the description is in the image caption instead. Usually though the alt text and the caption provide different functions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Let&#8217;s take a look at the first picture:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"346\" height=\"146\" src=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/webservices\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2022\/11\/tire-pops-1.jpeg\" alt=\"A male white bus driver looks stoic. The caption on the screen reads <em>Tire pops and kids scream<\/em>.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Without knowing anything about the story, we can guess that the fact that (as related by the caption) a tire has popped and kids are screaming is probably a significant moment. If captions were not available to a person with deafness\/severe hearing loss, then they might not understand why it appears that the children are suddenly screaming. You cannot see either the tire or the children, but the captions let us know what is happening.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The description of music can provide context for a movie or TV show. The caption reads <em>Whimsical, ambling melody continues.<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>There are many times also that the mood and plot are conveyed by no sound at all. The caption read <em>Silence continues<\/em>.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"how-not-to-do-it\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">How not to do it<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>It\u2019s tempting to begin this section with a sentence like, <em>And now for the fun part! <\/em>But although the following are amusing\/bemusing\/surreal, it\u2019s important to remember they are also real, and if you <em>rely<\/em> on closed captioning to let you know what is going on they might be confusing or annoying.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Some are just&#8230; weird:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image alignnone\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/webservices\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/spock-caption-400x229.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-18350\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Mr. Spock clings to a computer console, his face screwed up in emotion or effort. The caption reads, <em>Sobbing mathematically<\/em>.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Others are confusing:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image alignnone\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/webservices\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/spider-barking-400x219.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-18348\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Interior of a clearly wealthy old home. The caption reads <em>Tentacles undulating<\/em> moistly<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>How do they know?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image alignnone\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/webservices\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/cannibalism-400x269.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-18347\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">We see Dr. Lecter from the TV show <em>Hannibal<\/em>. The caption reads <em>Loudly implied cannibalism<\/em>.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Anyone who has worn a bowtie will know this is the only way to fix one.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image alignnone\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/webservices\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/bowtie-400x223.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-18346\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Matt Smith is adjusting his bowtie with a grimace on his face. The caption reads <em>Neighs in confusion<\/em>.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Clearly, there is a way to write captions that are meaningful and many ways which can be confusing or just plain strange.
