While it’s probably out of the scope of a site review to go through every word on your website, there are some high-level review tasks that can help you clean up your site’s content.

In the back end of your website, check how much content you actually have. Websites can easily grow quite large and sometimes older pages push out newer pages in search. Also, the more content you have, the more work it is to manage. There may be some old pages or posts that you can delete.

To do this, go to the back-end of your website and hover over a content type (such as pages) in the side menu and click “All [content type]”

From here, you can get an idea of how much content you have on your site. While there is no one-size-fits-all approach to exactly how much content (for example, pages) is just right, it’s a good idea to have both enough pages to house all your content comfortably (you don’t want unnecessarily long pages) and little enough content that users aren’t lost in. Use your best judgment (and maybe that of a few coworkers) to determine if you have too much or too little content.

Another step to managing your content is to delete any test pages or pages that are blank. These can build up as a site gets older and deleting them every once in a while can help clean up your site. Remember to repeat this process for news posts, events, people, etc.

Video Tutorial

Transcript

Module 3: Do a content audit

Hello and welcome to Module 3 of our Website Review Training. This module focuses on doing a content audit of your website. To do this, choose a content type in the side menu and click on “All”. Once you’re looking at your content, try to identify pages you can delete, such as test pages or outdated content. Refreshing or deleting old content is good for SEO as it shows search engines that your content is continuously updated or cleared out, meaning more relevant content for the user. As well, the less content you have, the less work it is to manage your site!

There is no one-size-fits-all approach to how much content you should have, but consider where pages should be merged together (if they’re too short), or split apart (if they’re too long).

Remember to repeat this process for other content types, such as news posts, events, orpeople.

Move onto the Take Action activity to identify some key pages and get rid of outdated content, if you haven’t already done so.

Take Action

Write down the titles of some pages you consider to be vital to your website’s purpose.
