{"id":17546,"date":"2022-05-11T08:41:50","date_gmt":"2022-05-11T12:41:50","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/webworkshops\/?page_id=17546"},"modified":"2022-05-11T10:33:26","modified_gmt":"2022-05-11T14:33:26","slug":"types-of-barriers-to-access","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/webworkshops\/creating-accessible-web-content\/types-of-barriers-to-access\/","title":{"rendered":"Types of barriers to access"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2>What kinds of accessibility challenges provide barriers to web content?<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>Visual &#8211; blindness, colour-blindness, shortsightedness, etc<\/li>\n<li>Auditory &#8211; hearing (when accessing video or sound clips)<\/li>\n<li>Physical\/motor &#8211; coordinating movement to browse and interact with content<\/li>\n<li>Cognitive\/learning &#8211; accessing content that is challenging due to the complexity of its presentation in relation to abilities to concentrate on and parse information.<\/li>\n<li>Neurological &#8211; items such as blinking visual content on the page<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>Circumstantial and environmental barriers<\/h2>\n<p>More and more, people are looking at circumstantial and environmental barriers to access. These could include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Illness including mental health<\/li>\n<li>sleep deprivation<\/li>\n<li>geography (e.g., underground, poor internet, etc.)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>Other ways to examine barriers to accessibility<\/h2>\n<p>Accessibility expert, David Berman, looks at the challenges through these lenses:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Permanent &#8211; example: blind since birth<\/li>\n<li>Episodic &#8211; this could be anything ranging from driving, being in a smoke-filled room, driving, medical conditions, tipsy<\/li>\n<li>Acquired &#8211; for example, the things that come with aging<\/li>\n<li>Societal &#8211; e.g., left-handedness, cultural items.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>When we come to cultural items, we can really see why we talk about barriers to accessing content rather than disabilities. People accessing our site are not a problem.
