Special education institutions are few and far between and lacking in resources, and stigma surrounding children with disabilities make social acceptance a barrier. Transportation such as tricycles might function in getting the child to and from school, but the large, bulky devices leave the children without a mobility aid once they arrive. Jennifer Vandermeer sought to create a two-in-one tricycle that can transition into a wheelchair in order to solve this problem.

Design with Uganda: Two in One Report

Convertible tricycle-wheelchair models already existed on the market, though Jennifer noted that the existing models were designed for a North American market, and the cost to import the tricycles to a country like Uganda was quite high. The only way such tricycles would find their way to rural areas would be via donations. Through her design and in working with local craftsmen, Jennifer aimed to create a locally-made and environment-specific two-in-one tricycle wheelchair.

Children with disabilities in Uganda face their own unique challenges, particularly when it comes to attending school.
