“My Heart Makes My Head Swim”:  A Conversation with Katherine McKittrick 

Join us for the return of the Flo Bird lecture after a two-year pandemic hiatus.  We will host an open conversation with Katherine McKittrick, who will discuss her recent book, Dear Science and Other Stories, as well as her institutional work to build Black Studies at Queen’s University, including her appointment as a Canada Research Chair.  McKittrick’s presentation as the 2022 Flo Bird lecturer coincides with the Institute’s launch of the Critical Race Studies Minor in 2021-22, the 15^th anniversary of the Sexuality Studies Minor at Carleton, and the pending change of the Institute’s name to the Feminist Institute of Social Transformation. 

Katherine McKittrick is Professor of Gender Studies, and Geography and Social Planning at Queen’s University and Canada Research Chair in Black Studies.  She researches in the areas of Black studies, anti-colonial studies, and critical-creative methodologies. She is the author of Demonic Grounds: Black Women and the Cartographies of Struggle, editor of Sylvia Wynter: On Being Human as Praxis, and co-editor, with Clyde Woods, Black Geographies and the Politics of Place. Her most recent monograph, Dear Science and Other Stories is an exploration of Black methodologies.
