The Importance of Academic Advising

Academic advising is a cornerstone of student academic success. Advisors support your personal and academic development by assisting you in developing effective study skills, refining strategies for academic excellence, understanding academic rules and regulations, choosing or changing degree programs, and identifying strategies to enhance your undergraduate experience. The Academic Advising Centre and Centre for Student Academic Support work together to help undergraduate students at Carleton achieve their academic goals. Similarly, the Engineering Academic Support Office , the Science Student Success Centre, and the Sprott Academic Advising Centre are central academic support units for engineering and science students, respectively.

Undergraduate advisors in each academic unit can provide detailed, program-specific advice on course selection and degree requirements, as well as on internships and opportunities for graduate study. This guide will alert you to important academic rules and policies that you will want to discuss in further detail during your regular meetings with an advisor.
