To begin, I wish to recognize the longstanding dedication of Dr. Rafik Goubran, who served for many years as Dean of our Faculty until recently assuming the role of Acting Vice-President, Research and International for Carleton University. Dr. Goubran’s outstanding leadership and long term vision helped to establish a strong foundation for the future of the engineering and design at Carleton. On behalf of the Faculty, I wish him well in his new role and know that he will continue to spread his innovative spirit throughout the Carleton community. As his successor, I understand that I have big shoes to fill and look forward to continuing his legacy of bringing success to the Faculty. This edition of Ingenious looks to showcase the role being played by our students, faculty and graduates as the future of engineering and design continues to evolve. The magazine’s cover story illustrates how new technologies are disrupting traditional markets and leading industries to innovate like never before, with Carleton graduates situated at the forefront of transformation. Our Faculty continues to intensify its research focus in green technologies and energy systems, with NSERC recently awarding $5.5 million in funding to Professor Matt Johnson for the study of flare emissions. Carleton is also working to develop innovative water solutions, having recently named our very own Banu Örmeci as the very first Jarislowsky Chair in Water and Global Health. Our undergraduate students also continue to demonstrate their ingenuity, with Carleton’s Planetary Robotics Team having travelled to the UK this past summer to take part in their first-ever Mars rover competition. Closer to home, students from the Azrieli School of Architecture and Urbanism are displaying their talents in the community with unique designs for street-side parklets in the nation’s capital. Looking towards the future and the beginning of a new year, I’m pleased to note that 2017 marks the beginning of Carleton’s 75th anniversary celebration. We hope you will be able to join us as the university celebrates this landmark with many exciting events throughout the calendar year. Fred F.
