Michael Brown is a part-time M.A.Sc. candidate in sustainable energy engineering and works as a project manager for the Canadian High Arctic Research Station (CHARS), Canada’s flagship arctic research facility currently nearing construction completion in Cambridge Bay, Nunavut. His research focuses on modelling and optimization of intermittent (wind and solar) electricity sources in isolated, diesel-electric Arctic communities using TRNSYS and GenOpt. In particular, he is examining the technical and economic implications of very high levels of renewable energy and the required approaches for safe management in a small diesel grid, the potential for using CHARS as a demonstration site for a renewable power plant, and policy considerations for deploying renewable power across the territory.
