On May 18th, 2015, EURUS professor Piotr Dutkiewicz gave a public lecture at the Faculty of Government and Management, Moscow State University. The lecture, “Democracy’s Unlikely Supporters”, was attended by more than 50 faculty and students. The presentation focused on the disturbing evolution of the democratic ideal and practice in both the East and West. While maintaining its basic core of human rights, Dr. Dutkiewicz argued that the practise of democracy (in the West sustaining it and in the East consolidating it), has eroded significantly during the last decade. Further, democracy has become a commodified democracy that serves mostly political and economic elites who have re-defined its meaning and its implementation along their own narrow interests.
