Allan Thompson

Biography

Allan Thompson is the Director of Carleton University’s School of Journalism and Communication and a Senior Fellow at the Centre for International Governance Innovation (CIGI). Prior to Carleton, Thompson spent 17 years as a reporter with the Toronto Star, Canada’s largest circulation daily newspaper, where he covered business, politics, foreign affairs, defence and immigration.

A graduate of Carleton’s Bachelor of Journalism program with a Master’s in International Relations from the University of Kent at Canterbury, Thompson has led key international initiatives, including The Rwanda Initiative and the Centre for Media and Transitional Societies. He has published extensively on journalism and mass atrocity and was the head of an international research project examining the nexus between journalism and the COVID-19 pandemic.

Thompson continues to shape global journalism through research, teaching and international partnerships and, in 2024, Thompson led an industry roundtable, co-hosted by the Globe and Mail, on journalism and artificial intelligence (AI).
