On April 25th, Marly successfully defended her Master’s thesis titled “Foreign accents in song and speech”.  The Chair was Dr. John Logan, and the Internal Examiner was Dr. Anna Hoefnagels, and the Committee consisted of Dr. Ida Toivonen, Dr. Lev Blumenfeld and Dr. Beth MacLeod. In her thesis, Marly showed that it is more difficult to detect foreign accents in song than in speech. She further provided evidence that this is because the rhythm and melody of song masks the intonational patterns of speech.  The entire committee was impressed with Marly’s work.  Congratulations, Marly!
