Title: Testing and Expanding the Home Literacy Model: Evidence from Finland
Abstract:
The Home Literacy Model (Sénéchal & LeFevre, 2002, 2014) has been developed to explain literacy and language development among children learning to read English and French—languages characterized by the highly irregular phoneme–grapheme correspondence.
This presentation will focus on testing the Home Literacy Model in the Finnish language—a language characterized by the highly regular phoneme–grapheme correspondence. In addition, some preliminary results will be presented that expand the Home Literacy Model even further. In particular, we examined the role of children’s motivation to read (interest in reading and the frequency of independent reading) in the relation between parental home literacy activities and children’s literacy skills.
