Title: Teaching Thinking in the Age of Large Language Models

Speaker: Jim Davies

Location:  2203 Dunton Tower (IN PERSON ONLY)

Date & Time : September 20, 3:00pm to 4:00pm

Abstract:

ChatGPT and other large language models (LLMs) allow students to have AIs generate essays and give good short answers to test questions. Having an AI do the writing endangers the critical thinking skills that learning to write (likely) teaches. In this talk I review the threat to formal education, evaluate some ideas out there, and suggest an onerous solution.
