What is CUESEF?

The Carleton Undergraduate Engineering Students’ Equipment Fund (CUESEF) was established on November 12, 1993 by an engineering student referendum in order to supplement funding for equipment and/or services required to improve the education of Carleton University undergraduate engineering students.

The premise of CUESEF is simple. CUESEF collects donations of $50 a year from each undergraduate engineering student and puts the donation into a fund. The interest earned on the fund is spent each year on lab equipment and academic tools. The principal portion of the fund is never spent which allows the interest each year to grow, hence “The Gift That Keeps On Giving”.

The Board

The Board of Allocators is made up of four student representatives from each of the Faculty’s departments, and at least three Faculty members including the Dean of the Faculty of Engineering and Design.

Current Members

Chair of the Board Of Allocators – Alex Greer
Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering – Elizabeth Cox
Department of Electronics – Chris Cresencia
Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering – Xavier Haziza
Department of Systems and Computer Engineering – Finlay Maroney
Dean of the Faculty of Engineering and Design – Dr. Larry Kostiuk
Associate Dean of Student Success – Dr. Robert Langlois
Professor – Dr. Fidel Khouli
Professor – Dr. John Rogers

Elections

The student members are elected during the Carleton Student Engineering Society’s General Election in March of every year. Each year two to three students are chosen for a two year term such that there is always at least two students on the Board of Allocators who have experience. One of the returning student Board members will take over as chair of the Board of Allocators each year.

Responsibilities of a Board Member

Board Members are required to attend regularly, albeit spaced out, meetings. These usually happen within a week of the proposals being due. The members are also responsible for promoting CUESEF to the student body, promoting their elections, and advertising the proposal deadlines. The chair is also responsible for updating the website and contacting projects about the allocation decisions once they are made.

Refunds

Likely, you find yourself on this page asking where your $25 a semester is going. Before you consider requesting a refund, please ask yourself what has CUESEF done for you and your academic experience.

1. CUESEF funds upgrades for YOUR undergraduate labs.

Each semester, many courses are funded upgrades in lab equipment to improve the student experience, lab safety, and keep Carleton Engineering labs on the cutting edge. If you think your lab could be more modern, reach out to your department rep to work with them and your professor to help change it!

2. CUESEF is for students by students.

The Board of Allocators that decides what projects receives funding is composed of one student member of every engineering department. These students represent the majority vote on the Board of Allocators. By donating to CUESEF, you are contributing to Carleton Engineering’s reputation, your academic experience, and the future experiences of those to come after you.
