Dr. Xuan Thuy Nguyen: guest speaker at the Vietnamese Humanities & Social Science Association.
March 22, 2022
Dr. Xuan Thuy Nguyen will be a guest speaker at the Vietnamese Humanities & Social Science Association discussing and reflecting on her experience researching disability in the Global South.
In this presentation, Dr. Xuan Thuy Nguyen will critically reflect on the use of participatory arts-based methods that involved young women and girls with disabilities in three disadvantaged communities in Vietnam. Drawing on the Transforming Disability Knowledge Research and Activism project, funded by the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada (SSHRC) [2016-2020], Dr. Xuan Thuy Nguyen will discuss epistemological and methodological questions in relation to this project. She argues that a participatory, community-based, and decolonial arts-based research approach is essential for empowering the participants to express their voices through multiple forms of representation. She further suggests that this approach can create a decolonial space for academics and activists to engage in new learning with disabled girls and women from the global South.
