Dr. Melanie Coughlin has been teaching philosophy and religion at Carleton since 2013 and is a member of the Disability Justice and Crip Culture Research Lab. Her research specializes in Japanese Buddhist philosophy and its contemporary applications in social philosophy. Within the Digital Pedagogy Project, Melanie is working with Saar to create multimedia-based learning reflection activities for PHIL 2700 Asian Philosophy. Various free-to-use multimedia materials demonstrating the present-day relevance of Asian philosophy were collected, and the accessibility of the materials was augmented where needed by adding image descriptions, transcripts, and so on. The chosen materials range from graphic novel excerpts to podcast episodes and will serve as focal points wherein participants can apply and reflect on what they learn from classical textual sources. The goal is to deepen and diversify connections between course participants and classical Asian philosophy.
